is it possible to get a file from smart music onto your ipod? or onto a cd?

Welcome to the forums! Unfortunately, the SmartMusic audio files are copy-protected. If you have a recording of yourself playing with a SmartMusic file, you can save that into an audio file for a CD or iPod, but you can't record just the audio, I'm afraid.

If you have the Finale file, just work from that to create the MP3.
