I just recently bought a new laptop which runs Windows Vista Home Basic (I'll need to change my signature!) and I've been having a few issues with Finale (I'm running 2007c).

First, every time I pull it up, it tells me I have to authorize it, which I already did. I read a thread that I dug up through the search engine, and Ebony Ivory said I have to authorize it in administrator mode (or something like that) in order to get it to stop doing this, but I don't know how to get into administrator mode, so that's a bit of an issue.

Secondly, I can't save anything. Every time I try, I first get an error message that says "Error 5 backing up file [file name]. Access is denied." and then after I click OK on that, I get another message that says "Cannot rename file" (as if I was trying to!).

The authorization thing is a pain, but not terribly prohibitive. The inability to save files, however, is a real problem, and I'd like to try to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Much love,
'Terna

Right-click on the Program Icon and select "Run as Administrator". This is basic Vista functionality.

EDIT: If you didn't install Finale while running as Administrator, it's probably not installed correctly.

I would recommend you re-installing Finale (as Administrator!) and then the first time you open Finale, Run as Administrator. After that, you should be fine.

I just tried the right click and run as administrater and finale (which had the nagging register problem) will not start at all.
The software gave a ctree error and now the error is "Finale has encountered an error please re-install finale"
I will reboot and retry and see if that cures the problem!freaked

I have done all of this. The authorization issue is solved, but I still can't save! I get exactly the same error messages. Anyone know what might be going on here?

I think that what might be happening here is that your files are being saved in a directory that you don't have full access to (such as the Finale program files directory). When you save a file in Finale, it first backs up the old file (hence the error message about backing up) by changing the file extension from .mus to .bak (which is when the renaming needs to take place). So if it doesn't have full read/write/modify access rights to the directory (folder) it will be unable to do the backup and the save will not take place. If you make sure that you are saving into "My Documents", or a folder under that such as "My Music", I think the problem will go away.

It you are planning on writing a lot of music, I suggest you set up your own system of folders. If you keep your music in "My Documents" or "My Music" you could soon have an unmanageable folder with all your abandonded projects, tests, projects in progress, symphonies, a raps experiements all rubbing shoulders. To give you an example, the folder I created for Finale 2009 files (in other words, since last August) contains 24 folders and 215 files. Folders for other versions of Finale since F2002 have similar counts.

BTW, my account on my computer is an administrator account. I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't know if that is a problem or not under Vista, but, if it works, why not do it?

I think Bill Gates just broke down and cried, all his efforts to make Vista more secure circumvented by the human tendency to do the most convenient thing. :-)

...or you could set up your short-cut/quickstart icon to run in Administrator mode every time. You'll get tired of clicking through the dialog, though.

So why not create subfolders?  Inside "My Documents" I have a "music" subdirectory, and create another subdirectory for every project. The path for all my projects are therefore:
My Document/music/Project1
My Document/music/Project2
My Document/music/Project3
(edit: Obviously, I really use more descriptive names than "Project1" etc.)
Sometimes project will themselves have subfolders for versions, or for movements of the main project.

I recently came across FolderMarker www.foldermarker.com/compare-versions.php which lets you apply different colors and other icons to folders. The Home edition is free. I've found it pretty useful for keeping track of things.
