I just got an e-mail about GPO 4.0. Has anyone tried GPO 4.0 with Finale? Is it worth upgrading?

Is it more samples than GPO 2.0? More techniques? Better sound?

And what about the SAM brass? I guess it's a scaled down version of the full Project SAM brass but are they useful at all?

There was a flurry of posts about it when it first came out. I don't recall there being any negative comments. I can only speak for myself, but, yes the upgrade is worth it. The SAM brass alone is worth every penny. The Aria player has grown up. It is still as easy to use, but you can control many more features on an instrument by instrument basis. (It also loads the samples much faster than the Kontakt Player 2.) Interestingly, you can change ambience for each bank of instruments. So, for example, you could have an orchestra with all its instruments set to normal ambience; then put a trumpet by itself on a bank and give it more echo and distance (both left-right and fore-rear) for a special effect.

Ron:
How many sampled articulations/techniques does the SAM brass have? Do they work with Finale's HP? Do they have the same keyswitches as GPO?

Is there a more detailed list of articulations and techniques available on Garritan's site? I can't find any.

Thanks
Albert

Albert,

Basically the SAM brass have the same techniques (and mutes for that matter) as the original GPO brass samples. That is to say there aren't separate short and long articulations, but are controlled with the same controllers as the original brass samples. They do work with Human Playback.

To my ear the SAM brass have more presence which make them sound more realistic in a sense. They don't make the original brass samples obsolete by any means, but give you more options.

It looks like everyone on this thread is using 2010, but I discovered a couple days ago there's a 2009 patch for Aria playback stuff. There aren't any specifics on what the patch does.

Hope this helps.

right!

Fixes in Finale 2009c
Playback
• Expanded support for Aria-based Garritan Sound Libraries that are sold separately.

(I suppose if you have the separate full GPO it does something ... but what?)

When VST instruments includes Eb Cornet, Bb Cornet, Flugel, Tenor Horns, Baritone Horns and Euphonium I'll be interested. Until then I'm sticking with my Yamaha XG MIDI.

Those are all available in Garritan's Concert and Marching Band product - I've used them personally when writing for Brass Band. (Tenor Horns are referred as Alto Horns by us crafty Americans, though)

Thanks Flint!! Where can I get it? Is there a trial version? (Wishful thinking?)

Crafty? I'd say sensible in this case. Alto Horn is a much better name for the Eb Horns. The Bb Baritone and Euph are tenor instruments.

You can buy it at a small discount from Finale directly - www.finalemusic.com/Finale/additionalsounds.aspx?pg=GPOB - though you'll probably want to check Garritan's site directly first.

I bought GPO in 2006-07. Is there any new string ensemble sound since then? I really miss some soft non vibrato strings.

That's brilliant, very many thanks for your time and effort making the pics. I looked at Garritan's site and there are demos of the sounds, including a British Brass Band setup, but not what I'd call a typical brass band piece. It needed a tweak of the reverb I think, but on the whole it's very much better than I have at present. It would definitely make a nice Christmas present :-) Thanks again.

Hi Pontus,
no non vibrato strings in GPO 4.0 as far as I can tell. Too bad. Besides that it's seems ok. I will probably use GPO 4.0 on my MacBook while I'm home or on travel (my MacBook doesn't have the horsepower for either VSL or Xsample.) Xsample does have non vibrato strings btw.

It seems it's not possible to stretch samples in the new Aria player. That's really important for me so that will force me to continue using full Kontakt instead of Aria.

Cheers
Albert

Tack ska du ha din gamle galosch - means: thank you your old shoe in swedish. I think I´ll upgrade anyway. It´s not that expensive. There seems to be more solo strings so maybe there is more opportunity to build your own ensembles?
