There may be more than one possible solution, but I will also suggest a solution that I have thought of.
As a college student my school has a mac lab with finale 2008. If a student edits a file in finale 2009 in my room, I can't edit it in finale 2008 at school or in notepad 2008 on my laptop etc... finale reader is a good solution to bridge that gap as far as my professor being able to play or read this student's file, but they can't edit it, obviously.
The feature I would like to suggest for finale Reader is to be able to copy notes from out of finale Reader, and to paste them into finale of an older version. This would be a huge convenience for college students who are going back and forth between versions all the time, and it wouldn't turn Reader into anything more than a reader, because in my honest opinion copying is reading.
Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the forum. Please note that this is a user forum, provided by MakeMusic, so leaving a suggestion here doesn't count as make a request to the company.
There are many people who have campaigned for a file format that is compatible across different versions, but it is unlikely to be implemented.
Currently, the only way to transfer a file to an older version is to export it as MusicXML. I don't suppose that Finale Reader lets you export MusicXML, though. You can't even copy from one version of full Finale and paste into another.
MM's response is to say that the data structures change with each new version, particularly as new capabilities are added. For example, it would be hard to construct Finale 2008, so that it could open 2009 files, in which the expressions have been radically altered, --- and to have done so before the method of the new expressions was invented!!
Regardless of whether such a format may be possible, it's simply not going to happen. Some suspect deliberate conniving on the part of MM to force people to upgrade. I favour the simpler explanation.... Finale 2009c, 2Ghz iMac; 2Ghz MacBook, 10.6.1 Edirol FA-66; M-Audio Oxygen 61; Yamaha PSR-410 Ancient Groove Music www.ancientgroove.co.uk | | Back to Top | |
