Say, I just noticed the free instructional DVD offered to new users of Finale.  Offer good until mid December.

Anyone check it out?

Well, if it is aimed at beginners (which I am guessing) then I suppose they assume that upgraders already know the basics and wouldn't be interested in the DVD. Given that many people upgrading from a few years back will be facing a fundamental change in the UI, this assumption may be incorrect.

Brace yourselves, folks. I ordered Finale last week and it was delivered this week. Unfortunately, I'm out of town this week so I don't know if I got the DVD or not. I'll report back on it when I get home next week.

Because the UI is new to me, the DVD would be of considerable use to me.

I'd like to see an instructional DVD, upgrade or not. Just because I've been using Finale a long time doesn't necessarily mean I do everything right or that I can't learn a thing or two.

I was quite surprised that the QuickStart videos taught me a thing or two. They are worth going through, even if you've been using Finale for years.

Not really. It was more a matter of long standing frustrations with just a few things that PM couldn't do. As I've said before, I don't need 99% of the differences between PM and Finale. In fact, I suspect that I will still use PM for a lot of my work. I fear that Finale offers so many choices, I'll never get anything done!

Fritz, have you tried the demos of the 2008, 2009, or 2010 versions? The new selection tool alone is worth the jump.

In my case, it's become obvious that Allegro has become abandonware. Eventually, Allegro will not work with whatever OS is around when it becomes time to replace my computer. Ofcourse,Inwon'tbeableto afford the yearly upgrades until forced to because of compatibility issues.

I would love to make the jump, but $400 is out of my budget.
I might consider PM 2010 or Allegro, if it is ever offered.

Mike, yes I've tried the demos and I agree that the new selection tool is nice. But I'm used to the old one, and it works and doesn't give me problems, so that isn't that compelling an argument to me. On the other hand, I had my heart set on getting the Allegro features (particularly beat charts and control over HP) so I'm going to be pig-headed and hold my breath until they get their act together. $400 for the upgrade from PM07 to Finale is way outside my budget (and yes that is the upgrade price); also I'm pretty sure that if I had that many knobs and buttons to fiddle with I'd never finish anything (I'm a compulsive fiddler (nothing to do with violins)). When I tried Allegro, I suspect that I would never have finished my tryout piece if it hadn't been for the deadline imposed by the 30 day limit.

Cool that we can at least buy it, though it is unclear whether upgraders from lower versions get the DVD. It's irrelevant to me, as the $400 upgrade is beyond my range, but at least I can buy the DVD if I want to.

A quick search reveals authorised resellers in the US selling Finale - no upgrade - at $450 to 499.
I myself bought Finale 2005 for around £150 as a cross-grade from Nightingale, which itself cost comparatively little.

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get an upgrade from PrintMusic for less than $400 from a dealer.

I'm afraid that outside the US one's options are rather limited; there is only one dealer in South Africa and their pricing for the upgrade from PM to Finale 2010 is the equivalent of $550. That's why I buy direct by download from MM whenever possible.

I would upgrade to Finale 2010 if it could be downloaded.  Buying and downloading can be a great marketing tool.  It encourages "binge" ordering late at night after some copious amounts of Finlandia!  lol
