Hello,

Quick question about the Manucript texture from the program options in Finale 2010.

I like to use the grocery bag manuscript texture. It is very easy on my eyes. I just wanted to know if it is possible to get rid of the textured effect and make it a solid color instead. I can't get a match in colour using solid colours.
Can anyone tell me if this can be done?

Thanks

Wanting a solid color is kind of defeating the purpose of textured manuscript paper! Under Program Options/Palettes and Backgrounds/Manuscript Texture you should choose a solid color instead of a graphic file. With a little trial and error you should be able to find a suitable equivalent to the color of the grocery bag.

Goodness! You like the grocery bag? It reminds me of someone who thinks of a catchy theme while shopping and the local five and dime and is need of some scrap of paper to jot down the melody. That's fine. But who wants to do that all day long while sitting at the computer?

Anyone who actually likes anything other than plain-dark on plain-light (or vice versa, for die-hard Score veterans) is wasting mental and CPU time on pointless trivia. Finale's purpose is to populate printed staves with playable "dots", and none of these tecks-churs ever appear in the printed output - so what's the point?

If you really, sooo-so much need textured effect behind your music, (oh, daerlings, it effends my aeyes to staere a whhhite beck-grind), how on earth do you cope with the rest of Windows? Word? IE? Opera? Photoshop? Etc???

A very simple trick, if you find Windows too bright - is to save the polar bears, orangutans and others by saving CO2 emissions and simply turning down your monitor brightness to a sensible ambient level!

And it you really want a grainy texture on screen, then simply scan some paper/cloth/rag, and print it in colour on a large sheet of acetate overhead-project film. Once dry, stick this sheet to your monitor with tiny patches of double-sided tape in the extreme corners, and all your software will benefit from textured backgrounds forever more ...

Hey, I spent a half hour looking for it and I don't even have grocery bag manuscript texture in my program options! Is this a Windows-only option? As a Mac user I'm going to have to register a complaint...

Correction, this method will give you textured foregrounds.

No, for backgrounds you stick it on the back of the monitor.

I have set up my personal default files and templates to use a solid color paper for the score and the background, 2 very light greens. I have been told that green is a colour which is easy on the eyes. But we'll agree that all this is a matter of taste.

Actually, I believe green is the color to which the eye is most sensitive (it's smack dab in the middle of our visual range).

Wow, I had no idea we had some wanna be comedians in this forum! All I wanted to know is if you could remove the textured effect of the grocery bag because I just like its colour. I don't need the effects or any third degree from anyone! I was just looking for a simple yes you can or no you can't answer!

However, for all the wanna be comedians, here's some advice:

You should be able to load the background image into any photo editor, which can give you an RGB colour breakdown for the colour you want. You can then specify this in Finale in Program Options.

I use a beigey off-white colour as my background, as it is easier on the eye than harsh black on white. Coincidentally, it's roughly the same shade as the paper on which I print my music, which is also off-white/ivory, to avoid 'glare'. smilewinkgrin

Yep, we're all wanabe comedians.  It keeps our sanity.  At least we are not vicious mongers as I sometimes see on other forums.  And yes, we'll keep our day jobs.  Honestly, some of the regulars on this forum are musicians, and as their day jobs they are busy with engraving and notating music.  Please don't feel insulted by our comedy, we certainly do not mean any harm.  And say, I like the green color scheme that was promoted here.  For my music I like a tan / off-white background that looks like linen paper and I use the granite background... for my taste.

Umm ... shining "black" through a texture gives, err, black. So whether its fore, mid or back (ground), it kinda makes no difference! lol

No, for backgrounds you stick it on the back of the monitor.

Fritz

Or better still, you could buy some spectacle frames and place some holographic grain images over the lens apertures - wearing these, not just Finale, not even just Windows, but your entire World could be textured! lol

Hey, if you can't stand the banter, then take some serious advice here: use Google to search this forum for variants of your question. Among the many hits you will find, is my suggestions about how to replace Finale's (2006 upwards) "default" grainy yellow texture with absolutely any bitmap of your choice. Anything from scanned linen to a plain, RGB = your favourite CMYK colour (go figure) untextured bitmap. My previous postings were for the benefit of those who suffer from Finale's tendency to forget your prefs from time to time, but they provide the ultimate solution.

Clue: grab a resource editor and start exploring ...

Brian

[PS - both my day and evening jobs require a fair dollop of humour in order to maintain the sanity of my many performers - with both cases of the letter "P" ...]
