I just got my Finale 2010 CD & am ready to install it.  I have 2 concerns:

1.) I have full installations of F2006, 2007 and 2008 & 4 installations of 2009 (3 reinstallations due to serious crashes).  Can I uninstall any of these?
2.) I am a very heavy user of plugins & my own libraries.  I cannot lose any of the information & files.  How can I assure they are preserved?

To clarify #1, in the past (pre-2006), I uninstalled previous versions but had terrible problems with fonts & overall weirdness aftrewards.  I became reluctant to uninstall earlier versions as a result.

To clarify #2, I have literally hundreds of FS scripts (it's not spelled out in hopes that the moderator won't move this to that very lightly visited forum, since this is NOT an FS question!), some with 300+ lines of code, as well as many libraries specific to my external hardware.  I cannot under any cirmcumstances lose these.  I copied everything in the Component & Libraries folders into a folder on my desktop.  Are there any other folders or files that govern Finale's use of plugins & libraries?  Does F2010 automatically duplicate previous customization settings, files, folders, etc.?

Do you actually have 4 folders called "Finale 2009" in the Program Files folder? If you do, then you've got a real mess on your hands.

To answer your question: check to see if the version of Finale 2009 that you are actually using contains all the changes you require. If so, get rid of all the other versions if you are not using them. (The business with problems with fonts and overall weirdness should have been fixable with a partial reinstall. It meant that the font libraries did not get installed the first time. That rarely happens anymore, plus there is a sticky at the top of the forum that addresses that very topic.)

You can ensure that you preserve your libgraries and plugins by copying them to another folder before your upgrade. Otherwise, F2010 should look at your settings for 2009 and incorporate them; if any plug-ins or libraries are missing, you can simply copy them from the saved folders. Finale looks at the contents of the library and plug-in folders to see what's available.

Thanks, Ron.

I have 4 folders for F2009:

  1. Finale 2009
  2. Finale 2009 Build
  3. Finale 2009 Reinstall
  4. Finale 2009 Second Reinstall

The program currently runs off the first of these.  Since I had really big crashes with the program last year I created folders for each new reinstallation.

From what you've descibed I should be OK.  I only worry (still) about files that are involved in the process (interfaces, settings, etc.) that I do not know about.

Given your particulars, and if you're not going to experience any performance problems, why don't you just leave things the way they are? You can uninstall all of them, but you need to save any libraries, scripts, templates, etc. separately so you can reuse them in the new installation.

When you install a new version of Finale, it installs in its own directory and has its own default libraries, settings, et al. You will need to tell Finale where your folders for your data files are (you may be able to copy an .ini file to the new directory). And you certainly shouldn't need 4 installations of Fin2009.

If you're experiencing so many crashes and other computer problems, you really should evaluate your computer and all the hardware attached.

Finale is the only program that ever crashes my system!  It's a very stable system with only a few anomalies.  (It never fully registers the total volume of two 250 GB hard drives that I installed in a RAID 1 array or an external hard drive but everything still acts normally.)  Even with Finale, however, most crashes occur in connection with Finalescript.

Very odd, indeed. But still, 4 builds of Fin2009? I'd crash too LOL! Seriously, you really should use only one working build as Ron suggested.

Is authorisation a problem with so many copies of Finale on your machine? I have 2005 and 2007 registered but when I tried to authorise 2009 I hit problems with the serial number.

I usually keep the last three or four versions of Finale on my machine and have never had a problem with authorization. If you have a serial number problem, I'd contact MM Support.

UCG Musician: I was working with RAID sets in the early 1980's, and this is something I can't imagine having an impact on an application. I still suspect that your problems are more likely related to the multiple versions of 2009 on your system.  Clean all that up and see if you are still having crashes.
