Both these (see screen shots) are acceptable notations for a Cymbal roll and both appear to playback correctly.

If you wish, you can add ties between the notes when indicating the roll with a trill, but that is not obligatory.

If you're doing this with orchestral percussion, you should specify what sticks are to be used, or indeed whether it might be a two cymbal roll (with a pair of clashed cymbals). With drum kit and the like, snare drum sticks are presumed unless otherwise specified.

Hi,

Is there any way you can do step-by-step instructions for doing this?  We've searched the forums but can't find how to add the cymbal roll.  If you just tell us the menus and the basic steps even that will help more than the screen shots you put up.

Thank you!

Enter the notes, then add the symbols indicating a roll. The first example uses a Smart Shape, the second an articulation.

We added the cymbal to a new staff, and put a whole note in there - even tried several whole notes.  The cymbal crash sounds very realistic, but the cymbal roll sounds like it's wood!  Any technique to make it sound better with Finale 2010?  I have the Garitan Personal Orchestra, too, but I haven't found a good tutorial yet on how to take the music from Finale and output it with GPO.

Thanks for your help!

If you are using GPO's Basic Orchestral Percussion, there's already a cymbal roll included. It's on the space above the top line. If you hover the cursor in that space, while in Simple Entry, you can see both the roll and the crash.
