I've upgraded from F2007 to F2011. I'm waiting for F2011 to arrive. If I copy the finmidi.ini and finale.ini files from F2007 (XP x32 machine) to F2011 (Windows 7 x64 machine), will my settings be successfully migrated? Has anyone done this successfully? Thanks.

Arthur,

I'm afraid there are enough changes in any new release of Finale that you should not copy an old finale.ini file into the new installation. While this wasn't too much of an issue with early versions of Finale, there are some sizable changes in the file (especially in 2011) that will cause unexpected behavior, such as crashing.

Thanks,

James Lund

OK, James. Thanks. I also have several templates I've created. Took a lot of work to get them just the way I wanted in F2007. Can I copy them from F2007 to F2011?

Any file template, library should be ok to move there. Beware, that you loose any of the new features included in specialized menus like Articulations, Expressions or Staff styles. You might want to integrate them so you can fully use the new Finale.

I don't remember if 2007 had Document styles or not. But it's in 2011.

Basically if all of your templates are similar, you open up one document and save it as a document style. Then when you need to create a new score, you choose this document style while using the setup wizard. So you can take one of your templates, and update the expression tool and whatever else has been changed significantly since 2007, then save that as a document style.

Thanks, Mircea and Jetcopy. Good information. I spent some time getting my templates just so, so I'd hate to have to start all over again to create them. Thanks again. F011 is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday!

I used to migrate my templates from year to year, but eventually, I had to recreate them from scratch. The 1999 default file, for instance, was a little buggy by Finale 2008. The more new features introduced, the more need for a native-to-that-year template. F2007 is a huge number of changes behind 2011, so it's possible you'll find some things not working properly.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'll probably just create new templates, then, and spend the time up front instead of patching things from the middle of a project.
