Ok, I know I cannot be the only person on this forum who owns PM and wishes an update to Allegro would have come. Now that Allegro is dead, I would like to present a feature request to MM about PM 11 (or 12 if 11 is soon forthcoming.) I think that PM should be able to do everything Allegro can do, and all the new stuff that PM can do and Allegro can't (now isn't that backward?) Starting with the 2 authorizations feature, then the lining up of dymnamics and other expressions, picking which tools I want displayed as well as where I want them. Maybe even the unlimited stave feature (although I've never written for more than 21 parts). Perhaps a small increase in the price of PM would justify a major overhaul of this product? If I am the only one who cares, then I won't bother, so tell me if you care.

Matt,
I wouldn't be too surprised to see an upgrade of PM. They have brought SongWriter up to the point where I now can recommend it as a good stepup from NotePad. It's a lot closer to PM than it was in the past. Consequently, if they would roll some of the old Allegro features into PM, and raise the price to somewhere between SW and Finale, it would make good sense.

Dang. There I go again, assuming that MM thinks the way I do...

There definitely is a huge gap between PM and Finale now that Allegro has become abandonware (I'm amazed MM still peddles it) so bringing PM up to speed with what Allegro could do would be in order. Based on past experience, however, I do not advise holding one's breath.

Jeannie,
Take the plunge! Once you get used to the new GUI, you will love the 2010 upgrades. And for lyrics, 2011 is even better.

I agree with Mike. Haven't been able to play around with the 2011 demo too much, but the improved lyrics tools are so simple! Since I deal mostly with choral music, this is a real time saver.

As for PM upgrading, I think Mike is correct in his statements; it just makes good business sense.

I took the plunge; I bought Finale 2010 when I received an offer I couldn't refuse. I just haven't installed it yet because I have been immersed in an another project (digitizing all my CDs, books, DVDs, photos, etc.) and have rarely even been using Allegro. I'm going to start a new thread about the new lyrics tool since I hadn't planned on upgrading from Finale 2010 for some time but...

Jeannie, if you only just bought Finale 2010 now, then I would have thought that MM will give you a free or refunded discount for 2011.

When I complained to MM support about Allegro not being updated, the reply I got was that since PM was being improved each year, it was getting to be a replacement for Allegro. This is hogwash, PM hasn't had any extra functions added in years (not saying that the new UI, percussion, automatic rehearsal marks etc, aren't improvements, but they don't let you do anything you couldn't do before). I can't offhand think of anything that one can do in PM10 that I can't do in PM07 - OK, coda systems - but how often do you use that ?

The most useful feature they could add would be the ability to hide time signatures which would let me get past about the only limitation of PM that is a problem to me. The second most useful feature would be much more control over HP and the ability to add midi expressions into the score.

Fritz, PM 10 can interact with VSTs, lets you choose which tools are dispalyed, and creates JPEGs. Allegro can't do any of that. I just hope that MM puts ALL of the old Allegro features into PM soon.

Lessee...does PM 2010 support beat charts or allow you to determine the number of passes on a repeat (see attached; play it all the way through to see what I mean)? Text box inserts (such as custom page numbers or actual play time), justifcation or position? All of these I found were vital for my work (along with "hiding" time signatures).

Just to add my two cents (do I even have that much in my pocket today?), I agree that customizable Human Playback would be great for PrintMusic. While I do not intend for my music notation to be seen by anyone, I have sometimes had to resort to some really awkward things to get PrintMusic to play back what I hear in my head. A more powerful mixer would be nice as well, such as adding a VST effect on a specific channel.

That said, since Allegro does not have VST support and apparently now never will, I will never buy it - VST is too critical to what I do. And barring a sudden financial windfall, I also do not envision myself buying the full Finale anytime soon. I suspect that there are a number of people like me: PrintMusic is extremely powerful for its price, yet its price is certainly not exorbitant.

That's my point. The power is has is great, but Allegro can do so many more editing things (like lining up dynamics-I just spent three days fixing this little problem in a 60 page score and the subsequent parts) as well as things like saving preferences that PM cannot yet do. Nice to know it is not just me. I think I will submit that feature request.
