Hi everybody,

If there is no magnetic layout in 2012, is there a real 64bits application ... or just x64 compatible?

Am I force again to use only x32 VSTi ?

Francois,

Finale 2012 is still a 32-bit app. With the Unicode implementation we're making steps toward the ability to make the jump to 64-bit.

what this "new version" is sounding more and more like, is a bug fix / patch to Finale 2011.

there is very little "new" that actually warrants MakeMusic calling this a "new version" of Finale.

I'm sorry, but all the hype you people put into this and the extreme secrecy you got into the last few weeks, with dropping hints about "major changes" and paradigm shifts or whatever... it was all horse pucky.

In the final analysis, there is nothing major that is "new" in this version of Finale.

You know what?
I HATE being on the other side of the fence now, and having to point out that MakeMusic just made a very major mistake with this half-assed release.
I've always been a very ardent defender of MakeMusic and Finale.

For the first time, I honestly feel screwed over by MakeMusic.

It seems in the past when I saw the handwriting on the wall and spoke up, I was treated as an outsider. It seems now the tables are turning. Without an incentive (price break) I might wait.

Hi Michel,

I'm sorry the feature set was not up to your expectations. As is with every release, some of the features will excite a lot of users and a handful won't be as excited since it won't impact their workflow as much. We try to develop for as wide of an audience as we can.

Have you tried the ScoreManager? With how it changes VST/AU handling and staff control, it's totally one of the try before you can see how cool it is type of feature.

Again, I'm sorry this isn't what you were expecting.

At the very least, if there really is more to this "new" version than meets the eye, then the marketing department seems to have screwed up somewhat in not getting that information out ...

I'm regrettably experiencing hundreds of notifications from AVG, that my download install is filled with threats as the "Agent.YMU" trojan/backdoor. Each threat of which I'm having to "Move to" its "vault", or presumably suffer the security breach consequences! I'm not even sure at this point that the program will satisfactorily run when "completed". I'll update this message later, as the install is finally almost over at the "Help Archive" section :<( Fortunately, I also decided to get the Media Kit "version" also, so that I don't have to go this download online again! I hope the program hasn't been sabotaged by an "insider"!

UPDATE: I've "finally" made a successful "re-install" after figuring out how to disable AVG (temporarily) without uninstalling it. So far so good :>)

I'm glad to see the Music MXL 3, Unicode, and PDF support, as well as liking the Score Manager feature.

Has AVG responded yet? I'm nervous about trying the download on my non-AV-protected system until we have the low-down on this one ...

Michel, like you, I am disappointed that since 2005b, MM still has not began to improve the way layers interact, leaving me with a massive amount of case-by-case manual editing on piano parts ...

... but to be fair, Unicode is a HUGE feature!

I just converted from AVG to Windows Security Essentials, as AVG gave me a BSOD and the only option was to remove it. If I dare download Finale 2012, I wonder how that will handle it. Any official word?

My view is that MM have taken a very significant step here; their problem has always been that they were so busy layering on new sexy features that there was never time to take care of the shaky foundations. They have now bitten the bullet and taken the time to fix the underlying problems so that in the next iterations they can make visible improvements without having the whole edifice totter and throw out a whole slew of new bugs. Unicode and integrating a new audio library (not player, I think - this is at a lower level) are major tasks, and that's why we see so much excitement among the staff - they know that this is what they've really needed to do for years now.

Of course, whether one want to pay for improvements to the foundation that don't add extra functionality is debatable. One could make a case that this should just have been 2011c.

And, of course, one can vote with their wallet. You don't like it: don't buy it. Wait for NotePad so you can use XML to backgrade a doc that someone might send you in 2012.

No problems with Microsoft Security Essentials Zuill!

I won't recommend AVG 2010/2011 to anyone as it slows down systems to a crawl, and it's paranoid.

You have my sympathies! FWIW, we had a very similar problem only last week with one of our major Malaysian customers: they could not install our latest Prolog suite while running Trend Micro OfficeScan AV software. What made things worse, is that site policy at this particular university made it impossible to turn the AV off, even temporarily! Eventually some sysops were dragged in to suspend the AV, and everything installed fine, and now works with or without the AV.

Bottom line: AV is a pain for legitimate developers, and clever virus writers know how to circumvent it. C'est la vie! :-)

Please don't misunderstand this, Brian; I'm not having any kind of dig at you, in any way, shape or form, but:

I've been using Finale now since version 2.2. I'm not an amateur, nor a "hobbyist - I'm a working musician. I've written hundreds, if not thousands of arrangements, for many and varied ensembles, some since published, many for one-off occasions/commisions, mainly instrumental, but some with vocals/lyrics, and I still don't even know what Unicode is; that's how "HUGE" it is ...

Unicode is now an international standard for text coding on most professional coding. By moving to Unicode, MakeMusic positions itself to enter far more markets around the world (in Asian countries among others) and to support composers and engravers who set text for users in these countries. I do not believe I have ever had cause to use Unicode in Finale myself, but I am impressed that MakeMusic made a move that makes the product and company much stronger and more competitive and allows it to move to a 64-bit version in the future.

Hi, I'm releasing the newest version of my software.
It's more expensive.
And it's download only.. well, you can get disks if you pay extra for them.

I've moved my offices to Europe, where I will now have access to a larger market.

This new version of my software is exactly like the old version, except now my offices are in Europe.

We've included new bugs to make sure that all our old users feel right at home.

THAT is about how important unicode is to most Finale users.

Didn't know that Polish and Romanian can be written in the Cyrillic script.

Anyways, the enthusiasm seems to be of local significance. Hope it all doesn't look worse tomorrow, when the euphoria wears off.

So far, the only improvement (and it's a big one) is that I could produce a PDF. (I haven't figured out how to set up instruments yet.) The tutorials are not clear on a few things I want to do.
