I just installed both Leopard and Finale 2008 recently. (Leopard first) Here's the problem: Every time I launch Finale 2008 it gets stuck at "initializing MIDI..." and crashes (quits with that window that gives you the option to "Ignore" "Report" or "Relaunch"). UNLESS I shut off my MOTU Traveler. Then it launches perfectly fine, at which point I can turn my Traveler back on, and Finale then works fine with it on, but every time I do this I have to go and re-set up all of the MIDI settings. Definitely a Kill-Joy when it comes to work flow. I still have 2007 installed... no problems launching with the Traveler on...
This is an irritating bug, that right now has me still working in 2007. I just don't have the time to go through that process every time. Oh, and customer support was no help. It seems like their philosophy is, "if it's a conflict with someone else's product, it's not our problem". OY
Anyway, everything is up to date, Finale 2008b, Most recent update for Leopard, most recent firmware and CueMix software for the Traveler. I also have a MOTU 8Pre and a Korg Triton Extreme (connected via USB) in the mix, but their involvement doesn't have any effect on the situation. Whether they're turned on or off doesn't effect the response.
Any ideas? | | Back to Top | |

Yes: Trashing the Finale Prefs was one of the only things the guy at Make Music told me to do. The others were removing some other file in another folder both of which didn't work. His final advice was turning off my other devices.
Yes: The MOTU driver for Leopard is installed and the Traveler Firmware is at it's most current (1.07) | | Back to Top

So the suggestion to make a "virginal" user account yielded the result I was looking for: ie Finale started up with the Traveler powered on. That prompted me to compare the libraries of the original user account and the new one. Figuring that the problem was with the MOTU driver, I looked at all the files related to that first. In the "virginal" account's preference folder there was a folder called com.motu.FireWireAudio within that folder there was one file called FireWireAudio.plist. In the old user account's preference folder inside that same com.motu.FireWireAudio folder there were two files, the FireWireAudio.plist file as well as another file named: 04ec801000.plist. It turns out trashing that second preference file resolved the conflict. Finale opened up normally as it had done on the "virginal" account. Yay!! However, I discovered that the 04ec801000.plist preference file is the file that contains all the information for the custom names in CueMix for all my channels on my Traveler and 8Pre, so trashing that file made the CueMix software come up with the factory names for all the channels. So instead of seeing the labeling for my Triton keyboard, I just see ADAT 1-2. And it's only when I go and re-label those channels that that preference file is created, so I have to leave the channel names alone. This is annoying, albeit not as annoying as having to turn off my Traveler and re-setting all the MIDI parameters every time I want to launch Finale. Anyway, clearly there's a bug here, and I guess I'll report it to Finale. I would think it would be a MOTU problem, but the fact that this conflict occurs with Finale 2008 and not Finale 2007 or earlier leads me to believe that the bug lies with Finale.
Thanks for your help Wiggy. | | Back to Top

After I recently turned on Fast User Switching in Leopard Finale started behaving the same way you described. Only, instead of freezing on "Initializing MIDI" it froze on "Initializing Floating Windows". I initially didn't try simply logging out, but rather trashed the preferences. This allowed it to launch without incident other than the preferences having been reset to default. I have several alterations in my personal preferences, so it's a bit of a pain to start like that every time.
I turned off Fast User Switching, and the problem persisted. I fiddled with the preferences, etc., logged into a different account, reset the PRAM, repaired permissions, etc. After a while, Finale stopped crashing on startup, but it was really slow to start up and it always created a brand new preferences file with each startup.
Just now I remembered reading somewhere a suggestion to move the preferences file to the Finale application folder (rather than User/Library/Preferences/). I just did that and it seems to work fine.
Also of note: I have a Focusrite Saffire Pro audio/MIDI interface, which I just started using for MIDI in addition to audio (I previously used a different MIDI interface, but this is meaningless because CORE MIDI has always recognized the Saffire as an active interface, regardless of what I had plugged into it). There is a known issue with Finale Audio and this box (among others).
In addition, I have had several "issues" with the Leopard 10.5.2 update (and the associated Leopard Graphics update). Those include wireless problems (not connecting to a 3rd-party base station, etc.). I am seriously considering a nuke-and-repave of the OS. I haven't done this since I installed Tiger, so I think it may be time, given the collection of audio and MIDI applications I use.

I was actually surprised that it just simply worked. It didn't create another preference file in the User/Library/Preference/ folder which is what I would expect it to do, and Finale held on to any changes in the preferences I made after I moved it there. Interesting... Following that logic, I thought I'd try doing the same with the MOTU CueMix preference files... not so much luck. CueMix didn't recognize where the preference files were and just simply created a new one. Any changes to CueMix got made in the file which was re-created, nullifying any hope that that would ultimately resolve the overall conflict. Oh, well. It was an interesting idea though. "Nuke and Repave"... Yikes, I just don't have the patience for that, good luck... | | Back to Top

I switch it off and Finale boots no problem. I am on Tiger so this is not Leopard-only. The crash happens just after the splash screen says "Initializing Program Options". I have the most current MOTU drivers and use DP and Finale 2007 full-time with no issues. This is a new conflict specifically between Finale 2008 and MOTU.
I deleted preferences, tried setting my Finale 2008 preferences to cause no audio output (Internal Playback off, mic source in/out to built-in) and still crashes. The important parts of my crash log says this:
