I use 2009 on my working Mac, but if I move a 2009 file to my other computer which has Snow Leopard and 2010, the Quick Look preview doesn't show the Finale page, but a message that says, "Unable to open the file. It has been saved by a later version of Finale." The file will still open as expected -- I just can't get a Quick Look preview.

I have re-booted and repaired permissions but that didn't do anything.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Bill

Bill,

Does the SL/2010 machine have 2009c on it and if so, did you do the 2009c update after installing 2010? I have 2009 and 2010 on the same box and when I updated 2009b to 2009c it overwrote the Finale QL generator (/Library/Quicklook) with the "older" 2009 version so that I couldn't Quicklook any 2010 documents and got the same "unable to open..." message as you. In my case running the 2010 install disc again (without uninstalling anything) fixed it to rights again.

Dave,

Thanks for the suggestion. I reinstalled the Spotlight portion from the DVD but that didn't solve the problem. When you did it, what did you reinstall? Everything?

Not the Spotlight component, but the QuickLook component.

However, it is a bit mad that the 2009 QL component should not be able to open 2009 files! But it does sound as though you need to get the 2010 files from the installer.
There is a very useful program called Pacifist, which allows you to browse installer packages, and install individual files from within them to their correct locations. Highly recommended.

Wiggy,

I tried to reinstall my 2010 software several times but the installation failed. A window came up that said, "To open setfflags, you need to install Rosetta. Would you like to install it now?"

I decided not to, since I don't know what that is.

2010 still works so I'll leave well enough alone for now.

Rosetta is the translator for the older PPC code that some programs still use. There is no danger in letting it be installed. But I wasn't aware that MM was using anything like that on 2010.

Lloyd,

My original installation of 2010 didn't require it, so I'm reluctant to do it on this re-install until I have a better idea of what's going on, since the only reason I'm doing this is for the Quick Look previews.

As I say, use Pacifist to peek into the installer package, and only install the bits you want.

I downloaded Pacifist but it wouldn't open the 2010 installation package since it is not in .pkg format. I could, however, look into the Garritan files. Am I missing something?

When I perused the Pacifist folders I saw one titled QuickLook Plug-In and in there was a plug-in called Finale.qlgenerator. I put that in the QuickLook folder in my Library, re-started Finale, and chewed my fingernails in eager anticipation, but it didn't solve the problem.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm not going to worry about this any more -- it's not worth the time away from music.

I've submitted a case to MM and I'll let you know what they say.

Regarding my question regarding the prompt for Rosetta during the installation process, I saw this on the "Knowledge" Base:

Question
I received an error during the installation of Finale about Rosetta. How can I get Finale to install correctly?

Answer
Mac OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) no longer installs Rosetta by default. This is not a problem for running Finale, but it can cause issues when installing. If this error occurs, first install Rosetta when prompted, and then reinstall Finale.

Are others able to use Quicklook with Finale in Snow Leopard? Quicklook is not working for me, either. I used to be able to quickly see what was in my Finale files but 2010 and Snow Leopard broke that feature.

On my machine new files created from scratch with 2010 can be viewed in Snow Leopard with Quicklook. Old files translated from Finale 2008 end up Quicklookless.

Try deleting this user preference file:

For the second time today I was quivering with excitement that my Quick Look previews might reappear, but deleting the com.apple file didn't do the trick.

Oh well.

Bill

P.S. to GN -- on my computer, I do NOT get a correct preview with files created in 2010.

Having followed this thread with interest, am I right in thinking that QuickLook should show the actual page of the music rather than just the Finale icon and the title of the piece, size, last modified etc?
If so, it doesn't work on my machine either. I am using PM 2008 on a MacBook Pro running Leopard.

OK. Try the following, using the Terminal.

qlmanage -p /path/to/Finale/file.mus

(You can drag the Finale document into the Terminal window, which will complete the full pathname. Don't forget the space after -p if you do this.)

Do you get an error message, or a QuickLook Preview? What's the error message?

Had a quick look (ha!) through this topic and it's pretty similar to a problem I'm having - I was hoping someone could help.
Since about Thursday last week, I have lost the ability to preview my mus's in Finder/Quick Look. I relied on it pretty heavily as I have to flick through so many scores a day and without the preview, it's causing a lot of frustration. I don't know what happened to make it so - we were having a few office computer issues but they are now solved. I don't usually turn my computer off if I can help it, but it was restarted a few times last week. I'm using Finale 2009, on Mac 10.5.7. I also had Finale authorization problems a number of times last week. I doubt there's any correlation but just thought I'd mention it.

Any suggestions..? Thank you!

I tried re-installing the Finale software, but that didn't help. I have posted the question with Customer Service and I hope to get an answer today. I'll let you know what I hear.

You might want to try the Terminal command suggested in my last post. Either the preview will activate, or a useful error message will be generated.

Did you ever install Rosetta? There is no harm in installing it and it will allow you access to Power PC apps. Some of my apps that did not open in Snow Leopard can be opened if I click the "open with Rosetta" Checkbox.

On my machine Finale 2008 files will not allow a Quicklook. 2010 files opens with a nice preview. I had installed programs in this order:
  • Installed Snow Leopard with Rosetta
  • Updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.1
  • installed Finale 2010.

Yes.

It's also worth mentioning that the QuickLook plug-in is Universal, so Rosetta is irrelevant.

Thanks Wiggy,
I tried your suggestion of dragging a file into Terminal.
This was the response:

I suppose the significant bits are "Generator used: None" and "No image created"
Maybe PrintMusic doesn't provide the QuickLook plug-in – at least I can't find one. Does anyone with PM know if this is the case?

The Finale.qlgenerator plug-in should be in the /Library/Quicklook folder. I'd be surprised if PM doesn't have it.

Is that the path you used? I think you've slightly misinterpreted Wiggy's Terminal command, take out "/path/to/Finale/file.mus" and just leave the bit from /Users onwards, see if that makes a difference.

Have you tried Wiggy's tips from other threads? i.e. trashing the com.apple.QuickLookDaemon.plist (~/Library/Preferences), trying a different user account, restarting the Quicklook generator in the Terminal.

Maybe we should rename it Quackluck? :p
