Just got a new imac. First time to convert. I had a setup on windows for the various tools in the palette to associate with the F keys. Is there a (free) way to attach the tools from the main tools palette to the Fkeys? Thanks very much.

I like Spark.
It's free, and you can set F keys to any commands.

You can also create Finalescripts to select Tools, and assign keystrokes to them.

From the User Manual under "General Keyboard Shortcuts":

Program a keyboard equivalent for a tool:
Option–control–F through option–control–' (apostrophe)—the center row of keys

Switch to a tool you’ve programmed:
Control-F through control-' (apostrophe)

For general keyboard control of everything I use the Freeware: "Butler".
But can also recommend "Keyboard Maestro" ($36 "hot-key" shareware)

You might also try a full-featured demo of QuicKeys, which can save you a lot of time

You can also do this within MacOSX under System Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts. There you can program macros for all the menu items. That's about as free as you can get, although I agree with Philip that investing in a real macro program like QuicKeys is really the best option. I can't imagine using Finale without QuicKeys!
