Hello all,

I am having a weird printing issue. I am using PDF995 to make PDFs of Finale scores. It usually works perfectly, but for some reason, in one particular composition file (a choral work), for a few measures on one staff, I am getting an extra line where the word-extensions should be. I tried printing with the smart word extensions turned off, turned on, manually adjusted, etc, and there is no change. The extra line always appears in the same measures, no matter what else is going on. It appears nowhere else in the file, or in any other file I have ever printed using PDF995.

Any ideas on what might be causing this, and how I might try to fix it?

Thanks in advance,
JFC

That line looks like it's placed where the "melisma lines" in lyrics go, when you extend a syllable over multiple notes, as in "walks___ on___" in the previous line. It may be that the lyrics got garbled somehow and Finale is confused (perhaps you inserted words in the middle at some point instead of just typing them in sequentially). Delete all the lyrics temporarily and see if the line disappears. If so, then you can decide whether to reenter them all or try find the problem word to replace.

Lyric menu > Edit Word Extensions

Find the anchor on the end of the line. Select. Delete.

Thank you for your replies. The line does not appear in the .MUS file, so I cannot see anything to select or delete. In fact, the MUS file appears exactly correct. It is only when I try to print a PDF that the line appears, and only in this spot. I already tried using the EDIT WORD EXTENSIONS from the LYRICS menu to edit the all the word extensions on that page and I also tried deleting the lyrics and retyping. Neither worked.

I am attaching 2 more images. The first was taken after all the lyrics in that staff were deleted -- the extra line is still there. The second is a printscreen of the MUS file after I deleted the lyrics -- the extra line is not there.

I am quite puzzled. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Also: Deleting ALL the lyrics (from ALL 4 parts, in a 19-page choral work...) SUCCEEDED in deleting the line.

However, I think this is a case where the treatment is worse than the disease! Now I need to reenter 19 pages of lyrics x 4 parts? Surely there must be a better way to diagnose and correct a stray line?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Go to Graphic tool and export each page as TIFF (1200 DPI)
and convert them into PDF format with extra sofware.
Hope it will help...

This indicates that my theory is correct.

You might try deleting a bit of the lyrics at a time and zero in on the problem that way. Probably it's a single word that's causing it.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I did find a solution: I deleted the entire measure before the spurious line (all staves), and then re-entered the reentered the notes, lyrics, dynamics, and expressions. Doing this deleted whatever was prompting the "smart" word-extensions. Note that deleting all the lyrics from the offending staff did NOT fix the problem; only deleting ALL the lyrics from ALL staves made the extra line go away.

Fortunately, after this fix, my deliverable is ready now. Thanks again to all who offered their help. It is forums like this that make Finale usable -- otherwise I fear that the unintentional complexity and abundance of "undocumented features" (i.e. bugs) would render it a hopeless mess.

Try to avoid mixing lyric verse numbers or voice numbers in a single staff. It almost always generates problems like this.
