Help! I am printing a version of Warlock's 'Curlew' with a new Hungarian translation. I cannot get the accents needed. I can find them in Word under 'Insert Symbols, subset Latin extended A' but they won't be copied to the Lyrics in Finale. Lyrics has an Insert Symbols, but only produces the basic symbols, which do not include the Hungarian double acute accents. Is there a way to add fonts to the Insert file? Or any way I can put these accented letters into my vocal line?

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but you might try:
Document/Document Options/Font. Next to Lyrics click on Set Font. If you choose something like Times Roman, at the bottom of the dialog box there's a drop down menu for script. Try choosing Central European; the sample shows accents.

This may help:

Set your lyrics default font for Times New Roman, Central European script. (I haven't tried it in any other font.)

ALT+0219 gives you the upper case U with double accent
ALT+0251 lower case
ALT+0213 Upper case O with double accent
ALT+0245 lower case

They were the only vowels that take these accents, according to Wiki.

NOTE: they won't show up correctly on initial entry, but when you go to the next syllable, they will change to the correct symbol.

Another option is to download the free program, AllChars for Windows, at sourceforge.net/projects/allchars. Set the font to TNR/CEntral European in both Finale and AllChars. Then, CTRL,u,^ gives the lower case u with the accents, CTRL,U,^ for the upper case, CTRL,o,~ for the l.c. o with the accents, and CTRL,O,~ for the uppercase.

Again, they don't show up until you go to the next syllable.

Thanks very much to you both. I didn't appreciate the meaning of 'script' and in any case it does not always appear usable when already in lyrics. I admit it didn't occur to me to try 'set font' for verse, which it should have, but in any case that only affects subsequent actions, and I already had the text in 'edit lyrics'. Luckily I had the original correct version in Word, copied it, and was a little surprised the accents still had to added. However, now success. So thank you both.

The important thing to realize is: Finale does not understand Unicode (unless this has changed in the most recent version). You must select an appropriate code page as mentioned above. However, you can't MIX different code pages. If your lyrics were in both Hungarian and Russian, for example, you would have to get one of the old fonts that included Cyrillic letters in the high-number ASCII slots rather than using one of the modern all-inclusive fonts. Always was a pain, still is. Only it used to be the case with *all* programs...
