I'm just trying to convert to OS X, quite
unsuccessfully when it comes to Finale. No doubt
this topic has been addressed, but I can't find it
anywhere:
My new iMac will not recognize my Midiman
Midisport 2X2. OMS evidently will not work at all
on this computer--or at least, I cannot get it to
work. But the bottom line is that I am entirely
unable to input anything from my midi keyboard.
I really am tired of having to use my old computer
for nothing but Finale. Is there any hope?
Thanks,
Mark Carlson

I'm surprised that you haven't found
anything on here about OSX (unless I'm
misunderstanding you). It seems like you
can't swing a dead cat without hitting
something about OSX on this forum.
At the risk of opening, yet another can of
worms, what's so bad about OS9.x? I'm
using it without any problems, and I run
just about all of the desktop publishing
software that you would see in any design
firm/printing facility.
I know that OSX is the future, but what
software out there can't run in OS9? It
would be more convenient for those
using OSX to have a native version of
Finale, but should convenience rule our
lives? How many times have you carried
five bags of groceries from the car to the
house to save yourself an extra trip, only
to realize at the end that it took more
energy juggling five bags than it would
have to make that extra trip? If you have to
use Finale at the same time as Illustrator,
Quark or Photoshop, why not boot in OS9
and get it all done then without having to
worry about bouncing between 9 and X? If
you have to go back to X, wait until you're
done with Finale.
OK, let the tongue- (keyboard-) lashing
begin!!!

Michael,
I'll refrain from the tongue-lashing (for now), but suffice it to say
while your logic may work for you (and be happy it does), it simply
does not for others.
The simple fact is that new apps have new features. By your logic
you might as well still be using Finale 2.35 on System 7. And
instead of using Illustrator, use MacPaint. Or just do it by hand. You
can certainly engrave music or create artwork on these. But why
would you when so many timesaving algorithms have been built
into subsequent releases of those programs?
Most of the apps I use are now OS X native and they are rock-solid
and really nice-looking. I can't even compare MS Office in OS X to
MS Office in OS 9 (just as an example). The Quartz font rendering
is SO much more pleasant to work with that I am, no lie, more
productive. My eyes aren't taxed.
I don't use graphics apps, but I know that Adobe has released a
good part of their programs for OS X. I imagine they carry new
features.
OS X is a truly wonderful OS. Having used many incarnations of
Mac OSes and Windows OSes, this is by far the most enjoyable. I
found OS 9 to be stable, but it can't even measure up to X. The
upcoming version, codename "Jaguar" (OS X, v. 10.2) is
supposedly incredible.
Finale is the only app I use that neither is OS X native nor works
even in Classic mode. Once I have a native version of Logic or
Digital Performer, I plan to erase all vestiges of OS 9. At that point,
if Coda hasn't yet ported to cocoa, I will switch to Sibelius (which I
am extremely loath to do) or else I will try running VirtualPC and
getting my hands on an (ugh) Windows version of Finale.
It simply makes no sense to me to have to carry around an
extraneous operating system, and on top of that, reboot my
computer, just to use Finale.

By the way, Mark, I cannot get Finale to recognize my MIDI
connection (USB Midiman keyboard) either. Shortly I will be
installing Reason 2.0 (for OS X) and I will then know for sure if it's
my keyboard and/or drivers or if it's Finale. I'm almost positive it's
the latter as I know that people are using Reason with success,
and my keyboard works perfectly in OS 9.

Well, some good news from me at least, (a
reference to my other postings about Classic
disasters) on the occasions when Finale 2k2 did
work for me there was no real problem with my
MidiSport 1x1 and Evolution MK-149 keyboard.
An upgrade from MidiMan wouldn't load to the
interface with F2k2 and thus wouldn't work at all
until I downloaded a little 3rd party native midi
prog. after that (again with the same rider as
above) it was fine - until Classic crashed...
As for the original poster, I'd advise staying in 9.2
when using F2k2.

Okay, so it's alright to have a copy of
Windows on your system and run that as
an extraneous operating system, but not
OS 9????? Am I reading that right?
I believe that running OS 9 and using
Finale and other major Apps is not that
bad of an idea because most of them
have been
updated and will continue to be for a
while even if
Apple is no longer going to release OS 9
upgrades.
Coda Music will come around eventually
but if you
are are more of an application user than
an
OS user, (but not enough so to switch to
windows) then using OS 9 makes better
sense. OS X is more powerful and stable
but it is still awaiting too many audio apps
that aren't there yet but work great in OS 9.
Why not use OS 9 with Microsoft Office
that I still
have, or photoshop that I still have, or
Cubase and Cakewalk and upgrade it all
when all of them are available on OS
X???? That
just makes sense to me

Michael,
I had already addressed the reasoning why working in OS X is
advantageous to me. Here it is again, in excerpt:
"The simple fact is that new apps have new features. By your logic
you might as well still be using Finale 2.35 on System 7. And
instead of using Illustrator, use MacPaint. Or just do it by hand. You
can certainly engrave music or create artwork on these. But why

productive. My eyes aren't taxed."
You said that running VPC to use Windows Finale doesn't make
sense, but the issue with me is having to constantly restart my
computer since the Classic mode does not work for Finale. I don't
like having to reboot my computer multiple times each day as I
have my own little theory about constant rebooting not being so
great for a computer. I'd rather run a very scaled down system that
will play nice with OS X. And it might even be that Virtual PC
doesn't accomplish this. If not, then I really might consider
switching to Sibelius after 12 years of using Finale. I don't do
nearly as much engraving work as I used to, and I have enough
free time to learn it. I would have to be convinced that Sibelius is
as committed to the Mac platform as to Windows, and for the
longer haul, to make that kind of a switch. In a perfect world I
wouldn't have to even think about these alternatives, but those are
the choices Coda has given me.

I'm perfectly willing to use Finale in OS 9, but I still
can't get it to work.
Rebooting from OS 9 every time I want to use
Finale is a pain in the butt, but I am willing to do
it, if only it would work. I still am not able to input
anything from my midi keyboard however.
I DID download an updated driver from Midiman
for my Midisport 2X2, but my computer still won't
recognize it.
So I am starting to get desperate. I have not
been able to copy any music for a week now, and
I have deadlines looming. I honestly don't know
what to do.

I am having the same issues with my
brand-new G4 desktop computer. I
installed a MIDIMAN audiophile 2496
card, but I cannot get Finale to recognize
MIDI input from the card at all. I had a
consultant here for 4 hours the other
night to try to fix it, and we accomplished
nothing (in fact, everything is worse now
and my pocketbook is a bit lighter). I,too,
have reverted to using my old powerbook
laptop for running Finale 2002. It takes
so long to click in all those notes with a
mouse! Suggestions or help from
anyone?

My problem's a bit different - I can't get Finale to
open in Classic mode.
It works flawlessly if I restart in OS 9.2. Well,
almost - I always have to restart twice to get it to
recognize MIDI input and output.
But in Classic mode the program launches, goes
through the splash screen, then quits. Every time.
So, every time I want to use Finale, I have to use
Extensions Manager to order up the 9.2 set (I use
a slimmer version for Classic - the set I normally
use in 9.2 didn't work at all) and restart the
computer twice.
It's the only program I have which won't even
launch in Classic.
I keep thinking my answer is somewhere in the
Extensions set, but God only knows where. I've
(so far) spent several hours tweaking sets, to no
avail.
Any ideas?

Can you launch Finale in Classic if you disable all extensions?
