Anyone experiencing this? I don't know how to even investigate what it might be, unless it's a serious bug and the company needs to fix it. I wasn't doing anything special, just looking at, listening to, and editing my score.
At the moment it crashed, I was simply viewing it on the screen. At least ten seconds had passed since my last action. Boom! Program crashes and I lose all my work since the last save. I haven't had this experience just once,
I've had it many times, with more than one file. Any advice, besides saving frequently? A rather frustrating problem...

I, too, am having this problem. No rhyme or reason to it. I was just sitting here this afternoon, talking on the phone without doing anything on the computer, and Finale just crashed before my eyes. I have had multiple crashes just today.

Do you have Autosave on? Some have reported problems with it. Maybe turning it off will help.

I am also experiencing difficulties with Finale 2014.5 on my mac book pro. I can't seem to edit the quite straight forward SATB-score of 50 bars, or write lyrics into it. Whatever I try, the program just freezes. The coloured wheel starts spinning and there is nothing more to do but to close it with force.

Hanne-Sofie,

Is it just one file, or every file?

What OS are you using?

Can you post the file so some of us can fuss with it and see if we have the same problem?

Welcome here. Hope we can help you.

Hello again,

I've tried several times to make a new file - by opening a new file and copy/pasting the music into it. This has helped before. I've tried everything from launching Finale from another user account, de- and re-installing Finale. Nothing seems to help.

I am able to edit the document in page view, but as soon as I start typing lyrics the program freezes after just a few syllables. The file is included here. The score is not very complicated or large, a four-part SATB score using two layers, with different bar lengths (for chant).

The only thing I have done lately to alter Finale was that I installed some plug-ins from JW (JW change, JW conceal barlines). These were recommended to me by another mac Finale user, and since I deleted everything and re-installed Finale the plug-ins are no longer there.

I include the file here, very thankful for any help. My choir practise tonight will I guess not include this piece I was planning to work with :-(

...and I am using El Capitan, unfortunately, this is what has caused all my problems with Finale. It was sometimes slow on Yosemite/2014 as well, but not like this.

You have the time signature hidden with the measure tool. Try turning that off and hiding the time signature with the Staff Tool. That seems to help for me.

Thanks! Tried that, but still the same. As soon as I try to put in lyrics via click assignment or type into score, the wheel starts spinning after one click, and the program is no longer responding.

I didn't have any problems with your file.

Have you tried trashing the Preferences or testing Finale in a new user account?

P.S. - Consider contacting Finale Tech Support with this problem. And if you do, please report back.

just had the same.

Downloaded your file, added some lyrics. Tried to save and Finale goes into spinning stall.
Curious.

Please post what the tech support says to that.

My crashes with 2014.5 have happened primarily during playback and on quit. Have you noticed that?

Hello again, still no solution to the problem. The support team asked me to investigate whether this is a problem concerning just this particular file, or if it is a general issue. They also asked me to delete the Finale preferences and start over. I couldn't find the preferences folder, though, it was not there at the assigned spot. They asked me to look in the Libraries/Preferences folder. There was no Finale2014.5 folder there.

In the meantime I tried a new approach: I made a new default document, this time I did not use copy/paste, but I wrote every note once again. This time I spread it out on four seperate staffs using only layer 1. I used the Staff tool to hide the time signatures. Everything was fine and I was really optimistic, but alas, after typing two syllables of lyrics via the lyrics tool it all went into freeze mode again.

OK, so now I was after all able to trash the preferences files, I found them in the end. But it didn't make any difference, I still have the same problem.

This is a head-scratcher. I tried several things unsuccessfully: showing time signatures, getting rid of word extensions, deleting half the piece in hopes that the problem is just in one measure. Still, I can enter a few syllables but if I click to enter in another place I get the beachball of death.

One thing seemed to work and that was to use the lyric window and type the syllables there and click them into the score, rather than using type into score. But I didn't try that very much and you might find you get the same sad result.

For me, typing lyrics works better than clicking from the lyrics window. The typing gives me sometimes 4-5 syllables, but the window finishes everything in one click.

Hanne, I might have found something! I had the same behaviour trying to edit your file in F2014d, Yosemite. And it is strange, very strange: I replaced the Norwegian letter "å" with "aa" and suddenly the lyrics tool worked fine. So there is a workaround (text search and replace to make the "aa" an "å" again.)

There are some other anomalies in this file; the Selection Tool will seemingly not make proper, well, selections. There seem to be some redrawing issues; I have to toggle between scroll and page view to redraw the screen. Never seen that before.

Edit: The above is all about your first uploaded file. The second one (.....igjen.musx) works as badly to me as it does to you.
Edit II: The selection tool/redrawing thing - which I never had seen before - is not file specific, and may be a local issue to my MBP and not to your file. Sorry about that - and now: Reboot

Hi Skala and Hanne-Sofie,

I replaced "å" too, but no avail, after entering lyrics without a problem with trying to save the file it goes into beachball mode again.

Hello again, and thank you Skjalg for looking at my file :D

I got an answer now from the support team. Malcolm there tells me I should not use "hard space" but rather use regular space. But I can't write liturgical chanting without hard space and I can't write out the chanting on regular quarter notes - I believe that a great notation program like Finale, also intended for theological/liturgical use, should be able to cope with this fairly common way of writing chants.

What he did ask was that I try to convert the file to Music XML and back. That is, first export the file as Music XML and then save, then importing it back the same way. This somehow magically worked, and so far I have both typed into the score and clicked from the lyrics window using both regular and hard space. But like you say, Skjalg, the document sometimes freezes for a long time before all the text/notes snap into place. It takes maybe 10-15 seconds and then *pop* and the score looks all tidy. Hitting cmd + D does not help or speed up things.

(Like I said, I tried to write a brand new document with the same music, only spread on four staffs instead of two using two layers. I typed all the music note by note again. The problems also occured here, even before I had typed one single hard space.)

Now I am going to type the Lord's prayer (using A LOT of hard spaces), hoping for the best and that I will get the score ready for choir rehearsal on Tuesday!!!

(...) the score is now finished with all the lyrics and editing I wanted, and I have re-downloaded and installed the JW plug-ins as well. No signs of any problems so far, it seems the export/import via Music XML worked like magic. Thanks for all your support and advice, you are the best!! :)

I notate chant for Lutheran liturgy almost every week and I have never had any issue with hard spaces. I can't imagine why the support guy would tell you that.
