Is there a way to produce underlined letters in lyrics, and use graphic characters like accidentals? This would be needed to produce correct output for accordion bass designations.

You would probably be better off using the Chord Tool, rather than the Lyric tool. Chord tool is useful for writing guitar chords, figured bass and other notation symbols.
You would need to create a library of symbols, and then these could be selected and placed under particular notes.

Yet another way is to use the Expression Tool. Use the underline style from the text menu. The accidentals can be entered as text inserts, also from the menu.

You can customize the placement and thickness of the underline (Document Options > Lines and Curves) and vertical placement, space before and after of the accidentals (Document Options > Text). Set placement to auto position the symbols, such as on a below staff baseline.

Only in full Finale.

In the Lyrics tool, from the Lyrics menu select "Edit Lyrics". When the window opens, select the text you want to edit then use the font editing options in the same menu. You can make italic, bold, underline, change size etc.

Thanks for all the infos. I forgot to mention that I am using Finale 2009, sorry about that. The "Chord Tool" is not an option, as I am notating in the "correct" (traditional) way for the accordion, which basically looks like a 2-staff piano score, with fully written out chords plus the international standard bass/chord lettering system for the left hand. The lyrics tool can be used for that. The #-sign can be used for the Sharp; however, using "b" for the Flat makes the text rather funny-looking; here, I would need the "real" Flat-symbol. So-called "Third"-basses require underline; up till now, I substituted this by a forward slash. I am going to try Peter's suggestion. I am pretty sure there is a way for doing this.

No, there isn't. Although underline can be selected, it just doesn't display in lyrics, and I did not manage to get the flat (or any other graphics symbol) to display in lyrics. Hence, at present, it appears to me that this cannot easily be done.

If you attach a picture of what the outcome should look like, I'm sure someone can suggest the best approach.

You must be missing something. Using Peter's advise, you can easily choose underline and make it appear on lyrics. As for the flat symbol, why not use the MaestroTimes font? It contains both regular text characters as well as musical symbols.
