I'm working on a job that involves dealing with a bunch of old (circa 1996/Finale 3.5) files in which the copyist put dialog cues on the rehearsal piano/vocal sheets as page-attached text blocks. In order to copy and paste them into a new score template, I need to convert these to measure-attached. I thought I remembered using a plug-in in the past to do this conversion, but I've searched through everything (including the full TG Tools, and all the JW and Patterson plug-ins) and can't find anything of the sort so maybe I'm just imagining that this exists.

I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction if there is such a plug-in, otherwise I guess I'll be converting them one block at a time!

Possibly the now extinct Forza plugin used to do this.

In TGTools under Modify/Expressions, one of the choices is to change a measure attached text block to a text expression, but that's not the same as a page attached text block.

Since each page attached block being converted would now have to be assigned to a measure, I can't imagine a plugin that would do them all in one step, unless they were all assigned to the same measure, which would seem undesirable.

I figured it was a long shot, partly because of what Zuill said about the measure assignment (though I suppose there might be a way for a plug-in to use the nearest one). I was hoping that this might be buried deep inside one of the TG or JW plug-ins and that someone here might know where. I looked through many of them and found the TG Tools/Modify/Expression item (and might be what I remembered using), but that's not what I needed for this job. I did use Forza until it stopped working so that's a distinct possibility.

I guess I'll be converting them individually. Fortunately, there aren't a huge number of these. Thanks to both of you for your time!

You can try a MusicXML round trip, depending on how much you need to retain the current formatting aside from the text block / text expression conversion.

I never would have thought of that! It works except for text blocks above the first system but it's easy enough to drag those down below the top staff before exporting to XML. Formatting is not an issue in this instance since the original file is strictly a copy-and-paste source. Thanks!

Just curious-

How does it work? Does it change page text boxes into measure attached ones, or into text expressions?

Thanks,
N.

They changed into expressions (which I prefer to text blocks anyway in most cases).
