Windows XP SP3 PrintMusic 2010
I want to enter solid notes (crotchets/quarter-notes) with no stems for a Gregorian chant.
Technical support have told me this can't be done within this program as opposed to Finale at a much higher price.
Has any-one got a fix for this? I thought I could use a black sphere and insert it as a graphic, but I find that note-heads are elliptical and sit obliquely! Any help gratefully received.

I don't think that PrintMusic can do this. I may be wrong, but this sounds more like a feature for the full-blown version of Finale.

If TG tools come with and work with PrintMusic then there is a plug-in (called "JW Change...") that can handle this.

PM can't do it. Nor can it use plugins. The only thing you can do is upgrade. Sorry.

You might also look at MuseScore, an open source program. I don't know if it can do it or not.

Musescore can do it; the current version 1.3 lets you do it on a measure by measure or by stave basis see Measure Operations . If you want to do more exotic things like variable length measures, it seems that you would have to go to the development version see Stemless notes . If you are more comfortable entering music in PM, then you could try entering notes in PM, and export to MuseScore as MusicXML to change the note heads to stemless. It would be an interesting experiment to see if MusicXML would then let you move the piece back into PM and if the stemless notes would stay that way.

Yes, stemless notes created in MuseScore do import back into PM and stay stemless, see attachment done with MuseScore 1.0 and PM10.

Interesting but logical. PM could do what Finale does were it not that certain features have been disabled. It stands to reason that functions achieved in other programs, like Finale directly or MuseScore via XML, would import correctly into PM.

I've been able to import stemless notes from MuseScore into PrintMusic, but still have a problem. The clef in the imported score in PrintMusic only shows on the first stave (although clefs are present in every line on the MuseScore souce file) - the 2nd & 3rd look very lodd without a clef. Changing clefs, adding new staves, copying and pasting from the first stave - none of these solve the problem. Any ideas?

Try this: set up a new document in PM, using the setup wizard, NOT the default document. The new file will have clefs on every staff. Copy the headless notes from your original PM doc, and paste them into the new one.

The problem is that the "lead sheet" default document in PM is set up with the clef on the first staff, only. This is not a setting you can change. What you CAN do, if you like, is create a new document, and save that as your default, or, as a template.

this thread is wandering awfully close to the "forbidden zone" of promoting means of bypassing limitations in MM child programs.

just a thought.

The "lesser" Finale siblings: PrintMusic, SongWriter, and NotePad, are often referred to as child products. All of them are based on Finale, but with many/most of the features disabled. In the past, MM has prohibited using the forum to talk about methods to circumvent some of these shortcomings, since they would rather see the user upgrade, and in fact, it is somewhere in the Terms of Use for the forum.

thanks Mike.

I found it in a discussion on art somewhere, it's not mine. I changed the wording slightly to make it a little clearer. the original was a bit more prosaic.
