There's a general assumption that 6/4 is always a compound meter. I question whether there is any precedent for it sometimes being a complex meter. The piece in question is basically in 4/4, but in one spot there are 2 extra beats. The phrasing suggests that it should not be an added 2/4 measure, but rather a 6/4 measure groups as 4+2. A colleague suggests that to negate the assumption that 6/4 is grouped in 3's, the meter should be written as 4+2/4 (see attachment). My preference is to simply write 6/4, but above the staff, show (4+2) as the division. This seems clearer to me, and aligns with style guides for complex meters (5/8, 7/8 etc.), e.g. http://www.music.indiana.edu/departments/academic/composition/style-guide/

Thoughts?

Since there isn't a link by which we can see your picture, my only suggestion is to make the signature 4+2 over 4.

6/4 isn't always a compound meter, though many assume it to be so.

Personally, I've recently used 6/4 where the feel moves between 2+2+2, 3+3, or simply 6.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

There are many assumptions in the field of music theory today. One is that 6/4 is always a 3+3 grouping (compound). Hence, under that assumption your 4+2 would be more correct if notated as 3/2. However, some players may find a switch from a crochet beat to minim confusing, if it is only an isolated meter change, the rest of the piece having a crochet as a denominator. Also, some players may wonder about 4+2/4.

Up to you, but one cannot always please all.

Regardless of phrasing, it seems as if just inserting a 2/4 measure would be clearest. Phrasing could be indicated by slurs (phrase marks actually) or cross-bar beaming. I'd have to see the score else. Of course, slurs and beaming would probably indicate the division of a 6/4 measure too.
