While poking around on the internet, it occurred to me that Finale does not have a plug-in for feathered beams and Sibelius does. I am writing a piece right now that requires a feathered beam. And right now the only way that I can do it is zoom all the way in, so that I can be as accurate as possible, and adjust the beams using the secondary beam angle tool. while I've gotten it to look ok, it could always stand to look a little better. And this plug-in would make it so much easier to achieve a professional look. Not to mention quicker and easier to finish a score

Why does Finale need a plug-in for this, when it has feathered beams as a built-in tool?

Of course, one can (and should) argue that the methods of editing/specifying the exact degrees of feathering, or being able to apply changes across multiple selected note groups at a time, in order to achieve consistency, would be desirable - but the same is true for pretty much everything else in Finale, from the simplest things like articulation placement to the specifications of repeats, slurs and hairpins.

but with the tools that exist in finale at the moment, one would not be able to achieve this effect

at least not consistantly

So talk to MM about improving their feathering abilities, rather than simply encourage another "plug-in", or should I say, "stick-on" "fix"! ...

... and one day, I really must learn to read what music notation like that actually means!

Thanks for the explanation - I've being playing piano for 40 years or so, but have yet to come across this notation form in any music!

yeah, its rare; mostly because the printing presses back when they were first invented couldn't do this. or at least it was difficult. that's why accel., rit., and a tempo exist, because it was easier to print. I think I've seen it used in only one score that I've come across. and it was a score that was published within the past 15 or 20 years

Bizarrely, one of the reasons I didn't buy Finale back in the mid 1990s was that Coda's early publicity material kept featuring feathered beams and other "non-classical" features, and I was worried that the program had been written for Avante Garde composers, and conventional classical/jazz/show musicians like me would be sidelined! lol

I ended up first with Score, and later Encore, both published by Passport Designs, and only switched to Finale in about 1998 when Passport had gone pear-shaped, and Coda had a really good cross-grade offer!

And I'm still waiting to find a single feathered beam in anything I'm asked to play! :-)

well then, in that case, you can premiere the piece that I'm writing right now. it uses feathered beams. thus I'm counting on you to play this piece and play it well
