When changing a solid note head to a half note with the Note Shape Tool, Finale 2012 (and possibly other versions) places the half note one half-step above the original location in the staff. The bug does not affect playback of the modified note. A modified note head cannot be moved in Speedy Entry, and the Notehead Position tool permits only horizontal movement. Has anyone found a way to move a modified note head back into its original place, or must we accept the limitation and use a rest in the attached example?

Since I don't get the errant behavior, I suppose I would need to see the file to examine what setting is causing the problem. Also, you can change the vertical placement of a head in the Note Shape Tool.

I, too, am unable to duplicate this issue.

Djard, could you attach a (small) Finale sample document here - for the gurus to examine?

To access the dialog box Notehead Settings:

either
1) use the Notehead Position Tool, and double-click the notehead handle

or
2) use the Note Shape Tool, and right-click the notehead handle.
In the context menu, choose “Edit…”

I personally find 1) a little faster than 2) - but that is a matter of taste.

I regularly change notehead shapes for things like harp glissandi and for contrapuntal piano parts, and have never had this happen either. I'm using Finale 2012 as well.

Adding to Peter West’s post:

The glyph with the open notehead (= half note notehead) is in slot #250.
This is the font character you should select.

The glyphs with a stem and an open notehead are in the slots #72 and #104.
In your particular case you should not select these font characters.

As far as anyone here can tell, there is no "Note Shape Tool bug".
There might be a quirk with your particular file.
Or more likely, it is user error, as has been pointed out by (the) Peter(s).

Oops! I mis-scrolled, not going going to the very bottom. I used #72, thinking the only alternative was the non-angled whole note glyph (#119). Selecting the stemmed note causes the problem I experienced. Using #250 solved the issue. Editing the note head to -1 also worked.

Selecting the Note Shape Tool, right-clicking on the modified note head and selecting "Allow Vertical Positioning" did not permit me to move the note head vertically by mouse-dragging, using the arrow keys or in Speedy Entry.

I normally use Speedy Entry Tool to edit the vertical placement of a note in a staff, since the Note Position Tool lets me move notes only horizontally. Is there a quicker way to move notes vertically?

Have you tried the Simple Entry Tool?

When a note is highlighted (selected) in Simple, you can move it up/down with the arrow keys.

Once Allow Vertical Positioning is selected, the note head can be moved with the Note Position Tool. Moving a note vertically in Speedy or Simple Entry changes the pitch. I was able to move the note head easily, bit there's no need to once the proper note head is selected.

P.S.: So, officially, this is not a bug. Sometimes what appears to be a defect is just not that, but something else.

Yes, choosing the correct note head eliminates the need for manipulating it vertically.

Zuill, I enabled "Allow Vertical Positioning," but am not able to move a note vertically with the "Note Position Tool," not with the mouse nor the arrow keys.

That is only for note heads, not notes.
