does there exist an easy way to assign a smart shape to several staves? With a shortcut like for the expression tool?

Not the same as expressions, but close. Set the items to copy filter to "Smart Shapes Attached to Measures (or Notes)" and just 'copy down" from stave to stave.

A quick means of applying the same smart shape would be a nice feature in Finale.
How often do we have to place a hairpin in multiple staves? I would guess, often.

The other thing that would be nice is a means of making a smart shape, such as the dotted/dashed line with hook, appear ONCE in the score (or twice, or more, depending on the layout) but appearing in ALL instrumental parts. I often use dashed lines with a hook to indicate the exact length of a ritenuto, and it's a real nuisance having to create a new line in every individual instrumental part.

Yes, I want that for the very reason you cite. Staff-list assignments of smart shapes would be great.

This is what I did with sample below.
1. Set filter to only smart shapes
2. Drew crescendo measures 2/3 of first staff
3. Selected 2/3 and copy
4. Select measure 2 of second staff (violin 2)
5. Selected paste multiple.
6. Set vertical counter to bottom of score
7. Hit okay and voila.
8. Then I selected measure 4 of first staff
9. Selected paste multiple
10. Set vertical counter to bottom of scor and hit pk.

A lot of steps - but in a large score with many instances can still save some time and keep positioning consistent
