I was entering a piece for next sunday's worship music and I have come across a frustrating problem. I entered 3 verses of lyrics in the staff group and two verses down in the white space at the bottom. But something has happened such that ghost versions (in red) of the last verse appear in the left margin of the sheet! I can't scroll the page far enough left to get at any "handle" for these text boxes, so I can't remove them!
If I use the Selection tool (arrow), I can highlight these text blocks, but if I go up to the Edit menu, Delete is grayed out.
If I go into the text tool, I can't figure out any way to "grab" these text boxes.
I tried undo-ing before the point where they appeared and saved the file, but when I re-entered the last verse and clicked the Guides so I could line the text box up correctly - voila! the ghost text boxes reappeared!
Arghhh!
What's going on? Do I have to re-enter the piece all over again to clear this up? Is it going to continue to surface? Is this a known problem?
I'm running Finale 2001d on a Windows 2000 machine (HP Vectra, 1Ghz Intel CPU).

I can't explain why you're having this problem, but...
>> I can't scroll the page far enough left to get at any "handle" for these text boxes, so I can't remove them!
Use View Menu > Scale View To > Other (ctrl+0) to pick a very small percentage value (like 1%) Then select the Text Tool. Handles off the page should be visible.
>> If I use the Selection tool (arrow), I can highlight these text blocks, but if I go up to the Edit menu, Delete is grayed out.
Try double-clicking the text block with the selection arrow, then hit the Delete key.

This was a sometime bug in 2001d. I'd save and close and restart Finale. Things should be back to normal after that.

I'll try the 1% view, but saving, closing and restarting Finale did not help. Even deleting the text and re-entering it again pulled the same ghost text boxes back in.
I fear I'm going to need to re-enter the whole score again.

Dan,
I don't think it should be necessary to do the whole score all over again. If this is a file specific problem, one solution could be to set up new score and paste the content (i.e. without text blocks) of the old one into it.
You have tested that the duplicate text block also prints, I presume, so that this is a real problem with one (?) block.
Try changing the Frame Attributes of the text block - from left to right and from top to bottom (or what would be appropriate) - and see what happens.

I found out what these ghost text blocks were - they were "Abbreviated Group Names" from the staff attributes. I stumbled across this by accident and found I could delete them by wiping out the contents of the Abbreviated Group Names.
The problem is that when I wipe them out, it also wipes out the text block!
How did these two items get inextricably linked?

Ah, yes. It's a bug, although Coda has never acknowledged it. Click here to read a previous report.
