I am an elementary general  music teacher and have an unusual way I would like to apply SmartMusic in my classroom. I use a lot of CD accompaniments for my students recorder playing. Is there some way I can create a SmartMusic accompaniment that doesn't actually have an accompaniment and is just the solo instrument? I have done this with FPA, but I would like to show the multimeasure rests, repeat signs, etc. as they should be written. I also wonder if there is some way I can synchronize the smart music notation screen with my CD accompaniment. It seems like I always have an unorthodox use for software and need a feature that is not existant because it wasn't intended to be used that way. It is apparently just my nature to make things difficult. eyes

Hi Beth,

From Finale 2005 you can save SmartMusic IA files with the extra notation elements you mentioned. Technically these must include an accompaniment staff, but there's nothing that prevents you from leaving that empty. And this is NOT the same as the file you choose for displaying in SmartMusic. For the display, you just choose the solo file without the accompaniment. In other words, you can make it work like it does in FPA but show the extra elements.

Note that this would not work for assessment files - only for IA files (and the intelligent accompaniment can be turned off. The assessment saving feature will have the same restrictions as FPA.

I don't know of any good way to sync the playback with a CD. About the best I can think of would be to take the wave files off the CD, edit the start times so that there's no delay, load the files in a media player and then just hit play after the count-off in SmartMusic. That's sort of a lot of work though. You might check to see if there are any MIDI files of the songs you are performing and use those to make the accompaniments in Finale.

Windows XP, all updates

Thanks, Tyler. This helped me a lot. I had thought about converting the CD accompaniment to midi, but it wouldn't have the cow sound effects that my kids think are so cool. We're doing a cowboy recorder piece. So, I guess I'll just have to keep using the overhead for this piece.
