To whom it may concern:

I am new to smart music and so may be asking for something everyone else knows the answer to..... I have run into this several times while trying to use smart music... I need to add to the smart music portfolio,  music that simply doesn't exist there.... is there a way to so?  This for my personal practice sessions? freaked Maybe this is considered piracy but unless I can practice my assigned pieces of music and these are all way older than the 50 year limit on them... I have a hard time taking smart music as a practical choice for serious art study.....skull I am nearing the finish of an undergraduate music education degree and would love to recommend this software because it does alot of nice things but this is a serious problem when some of the core music that is studied on a collegate level is missing from the repetoir..... helpredface

Yes, you can create your own SmartMusic Accompaniments. You can even make accompaniments that will appear on the screen in SmartMusic, so you don't always have to dig out the sheet music.

The company makes notation software that you can use to create SM accompaniments. Finale is the top level, and then Allegro. PrintMusic can also do it, but lacks many of the features. If it's an option for you, I recommend looking at the full Finale. Although it retails for $600, you can purchase it at an academic discount, bringing it to under $200, depending where you shop (check www.academicsuperstore.com and E-bay).

If you're not familiar with Finale or any of these programs, you might want to try the demo(s). They can be found on www.finalemusic.com. If you're going to be a music teacher, you will find use for Finale. I use it to make SM accompaniments for my students.

As far as legal issues, as long as you're not distributing the accompaniments you create to people who don't own the sheet music, you're not going to run into problems.

Occasionally I can find a particular piece I need on the net in the form of a MIDI file. This can of course be opened in Finale and saved as an SM accompaniment.

Scanning is another possible solution. It might be worth the time to experiment with Sharp Eye and importing the files into Finale (www.visiv.co.uk).
