Ekay,
"Thierry ... I have to wonder if we're checking the same tiff file."
We are. (How bad would I look on this Forum if I had checked another file? ) Have a look at the attached screenshot if you want. I use GraphicConverter 4.9.1. Your file is not a 2 color black and white TIF file without a doubt or a mystery. By the way, thanks for the info, Migman. We now know that if a TIF file is 8bit, it is not a 2 color TIF.

I have scanned TIF files with the best black and white image capture option that my one year old HP scanner provides. Outside of buying another scanner (which isn't an option, budget-wise), are there some work-arounds I might try? Would GraphicConverter or another photo editing program be able to change/adjust TIF files to meet the requirements of SmartScore Lite? I am open to all suggestions and ideas .... the point is to get the TIF files read by SmartScore Lite. Surely, there is a way.
Thierry ... I certainly didn't mean to insult your expertise in any way - just a little surprised that my GraphicConverter pixmap info. was different from yours when checking the same file. My goal is to get this resolved in some way so I can use Finale to it's fullest offerings.
Thank you. | Back to Top | |

The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
…so I couldn't check it myself. I work with the full version of Photoshop, which offers 8 different color modes, including 1-bit (sometimes called bitmap or line art), 8-bit grayscale, duotone, Index color, RGB, CMYK, LAB color, and Multichannel. You can change a file into any of these modes. I don't know how any other programs work, but Photoshop will do what you need. | Back to Top

As I am in extensive testing of Finale2004 at the moment (see my long new post from today) I was courios about the scanning thing myself. I tryed it out and was a bit luckier than you. I scanned into Photoshop, adjusted contrast a bit and was then able to open it with SmartScore lite (the name ended with .tif, 1bit b/w, 300dpi). The scanner is a little CanoScan N670U by (you gessed it) Canon. I'm attaching an example file for you to see what the completely non-edited result in Finale locked like, the original source I have put on top (btw, it's a piece by elliott carter). As you can see, it's only usable for really simple music, there's a lot of cleaning up needed (although sometimes it gets measures right, like the 3rd and 4th...). So it might be a time saver if you have, say, pages of minimal music to scan, but it has it's limits for sure. This example here I'd probably rather input from scratch than cleaning it up....
so- you probably are not missing that much... regards, Dan Finale2004/2x1GhzG4/768RAM/OSX2.8/CinemaDisplay+2nd18'TFT

SSL does work physically, at least, IF one can get the "perfect" scan settings. It is a disappointing, inadequate feature within Finale however. The idea of scanning scores into a notation program for further work would be valuable help for those of us who need to do so, but if the results are as they are shown with SSL, the technology needs tremendous improvement for it to be worthy of a professional notation program. Accuracy and quality are imperatives for this idea to be useful to any degree.
Many read or post concerns to gain knowlege/help for various "issues", so I do hope this "adventure" has helped some. Personally, I will go back to editing scores "the old fashion way", until technology catches up to its possibilities.
Thank you .... everyone. | Back to Top

But after saving as a Finale file, finale does not recognize it. According to oth SmartScore and Finale feature lists it should. Has anyone else had an experience with these two programs working or not working together? | Back to Top

I've used Smartscore since the beginning. I've never had problems with Smartscore being unable to load my TIFF files. If the web site demo is any indication, the new version of Smartscore is greatly improved over earlier versions, which I tried once each and abandoned.
You will have pretty good success with a LARGE monophonic engraved piece of music like a flute or trumpet part. If conditions are right, you may have good luck on something like an SATB hymn on a grand staff, with clear stems up/stems down.
I've never had any luck with a full score of any kind or size. It takes longer for me to edit the corrections than to enter the notes directly into Finale. Others will no-doubt disagree. I guess it depends on how efficient you are with Finale note entry, and how much time you want to spend learning the Smartscore interface. Of course scanning in manuscript is a complete no-no. | Back to Top
