Besides the 3 well known plug in developers (Jari, Tobias, Robert), has anyone else successfully developed plug ins for Finale? What do your creations do? Would you be interested in selling to interested parties?

Recordare's Dolet 5 for Finale plug-in lets Finale read and write MusicXML and open Score Format files all the way back to Finale 2000 (on Windows) and Finale 2004 (on Mac). The plug-in also provides enhanced MusicXML import and export beyond what is built into Finale. It is available for sale at our online store:

We can do custom plug-in development for Finale, but it would need to be the right type of project for us. Our more common development services involve enhancing MusicXML export and import in the Dolet plug-in to meet the requirements of new products and services that need to share music with Finale.

Thanks Michael and SF. I was aware of most of these resources. My interest is in knowing if there are any private, non-commercial individuals who have developed plug ins. If so, I might invest time in attempting to learn the process myself, even though that might prove an impossible task given my very basic computer skills. I have read some of the available information on developing plug ins, but all I have gained from those sources is a headache and the desire for a good stiff alcoholic drink.

Given than MM won't give you a plug-in development kit anymore, and that the documentation of the old kit, should you manage to beg one off of someone, is sketchy, it seems like an uphill battle even for a seasoned programmer.

The plug-in development kit was always aimed at experienced developers. As the 2000 PDK said on the front page of the documentation: "If you’ve never compiled, don’t know how to link, or think C++ is a little better than a C+ for a grade, just write down your feature request, email it to us and STOP HERE."

Since then, Finalescript was added to Finale in order to make customizations accessible to more Finale users.

But it seems like real benefit of providing a plug-in developement kit is not to give the average user a way of making customizations but rather to encourage third-party experts to develop add-ons that add value to the product, both commercial products like yours and free ones like Jari's in the spirit of Firefox or Chrome add-ons. Anything MM can do to make that easier can only be good for Finale.

The Sibelius plug-in development language looks very cool, by the way! It has a 150-page manual, and there are indeed dozens of 3rd-party plug-ins available.
