I know that many on here are also members of Compose music forums.
I got an email from Mike saying that the host server has been hit with a web attack and they have shut down until they can get things up and running again.

For now there is no estimated time for that and since Mike can't notify everyone, I thought I'd drop a note here.

Sorry if it offends anyone.

Offense? Try gratitude! I've been having trouble with idiot Earthlink (anyone know a good ISP?) and didn't know if Compose was down or if it was Earthlink.

Thanks,

Jeannie

Me too. I assumed that was the case, but appreciate the confirmation.

(Tried to post this earlier, but it isn't showing up for some reason.)

(Currently using: Finale 2003a, Windows XP-Home, TGTools 2.25, and The Glenlivet when I can afford it.)

Our host servers were hit with a DOS (denial of service) attack, most likely by a script kiddie (one who knows little about computers but knows how to run a script they found on the internet). DOS attacks are performed by a computer or computers who repeatedly flood the IP address with service requests until the server is overwhelmed with the traffic, all bandwidth is eaten up, and no one can then get on.

In this particular case we were one among hundreds of sites affected, and I do not believe in any way we were the target of this attack. For a brief time the site was back up (on Friday) and then brought down by another attack.

This morning (6:38am PST) the site is up but my web hosts say they are still working on the situation, so it's possible it may go down again at any time. Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused -- our servers have provided at least 99% uptime over the three years I've been hosted with them so I'm hesitant to switch hosts due to this one incident, but rest assured we will do whatever is necessary to make sure the forums are reliable.
