I would love to create some loopable II-Vs for my students. Am i missing something simple here? I am using Finale 2005. I tried to change the file suffixe to match the ones in the exercise folder but it didn't appear....

Thanks in advance for any help.

BTW, if the salution is simple and obvious just remember I am a trumpetplayer.......Worse yet a lead player......... freaked

The latest versions of SmartMusic look to a database file for all of the exercises, so I don't think you'll be able to add exercises in this manner. However, you can create them as SmartMusic accompaniments. The next version of SmartMusic which should be out soon will support on-screen notation of accompaniments created from Finale. While this doesn't offer all of the features of the looping in exercises, a basic loop can be turned on (no transposing by fifth at the end). And the music can be transposed within the SM interface.

Also, I know that jazz studies are one of the more popular feature requests, so don't be surprised if you see something like this in a future version.

Hello,
@Tyler, I want to make accompaniments and exercises with PrintMusic 2004 (German version). My first attempts work well, I can hear the music in SM and can separate solo and accomp. But there is an option in the SmartMusic Wizzard of PrintMusic to add notation to the .smp file. I use it, but I can't find the notation in SM. Does Your answer mean, SM 8.4 can't show them, but the next version can?
Will assessment and red and green notes be possible then with own exercises?
I have another few questions:
Will "Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble" by Mike Steinel be available as methods in next time?
What is the difference between SmartMusic and FINALE Performance Assessment ?
When is soon? ;-) (out of the next version)

@kevindrew
what are II-Vs?

Best wishes and a happy new year from northern Germany

Mike

Yes, 8.4 can't display the notation onscreen, but the next version is being designed to do so. Assessment is possible, but only for files created from Finale 2005 specifically for that purpose (this was a new addition in Finale 2005 this year).

I'm not sure what new material will be included with the program, but you should send in a feature request for anything you want included. They won't be able to fit requests in for this next release, but perhaps for a future one.

Finale Performance Assessment is based around the assessment feature in SmartMusic. You can make assessment files in Finale 2005 and save them to be opened in FPA. FPA is much more limited that SmartMusic, especially in that no accompaniment can exist in the background. Also, it has no intelligent accompaniment following capability and it lacks many of the options available in the methods/exercises windows of SmartMusic.

I can't say exactly when soon is. But I would guess it's sooner rather than later.

I'm not a jazz person, but my rough understanding of II-V is that it's a progression from the 2 chord to the 5 chord. If you think of being in the key of C, the major 2 chord would be D Major, with the F# being the leading tone to G, which is where it resolves. I believe jazz uses a lot of this 5 of 5 action.

As Tyler indicated, the ii - V - I chord progression is fundemental to jazz & other popular music styles. To clarify the specifics a bit, in the key of C major, here are the root position spellings in both 3- & 4-part harmony:

ii [subdominant sound, closely related to IV chord]: D-F-A [minor triad], or D-F-A-C [minor 7th chord]
V [dominant sound, closely related to vii chord]: G-B-D [major triad], or G-B-D-F [dominant 7th chord]
I [tonic sound, closely related to iii & vi chords] : C-E-G [major triad], or C-E-G-B [major 7th chord]

Ah rats. I was thinking that jazz used the minor ii to V, but when I saw the person had written II-V, I assumed I was wrong. Should have just gone on instinct. Thanks Pete!

SmartMusic 8.5 was just release. It contains support for showing the notation from our SMP files we've created in Finale. This works both for intelligent accompaniments and assessment.
