Got a problem when extracting parts. Choosing "generate names from" with "open extracted parts" checked, each part should be opened and saved automatically. But instead, "save" box pops up for each part, like "prompt for each name." There used to be no problem with this, and now there is. I tried to reinstall finale and install it in another PC(Window XP), and it was almost the same.

Does anybody have an idea for me?

As I recall, this is one of the features that is a "non-feature" in 2012. In other words, it's broken.

Would linked parts be an option?

Yes; don't extract parts, use linked parts instead. Unless you are dealing with very large and massively complex orchestral scores, there are unlikely to be any circumstances which require part extraction because linked parts can't handle them.

This is not to say, of course, that MM shouldn't fix the problem anyway ...

I suspect that there are still a lot of veteran Finale users who have never learned about linked parts and perhaps don't even know they exist.

According to MakeMusic, the bug is limited to Finale 2012 under Windows 7 : makemusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4990/~/unable-to-generate-part-names-automatically-when-extracting-parts-in-finale-2012.

Well, if you type 'linked parts' into the Finale user manual, the very first search result will tell you all you need to know!

Parts have to be generated in both cases, of course (extracted or linked parts).
Then File -> print, and in the window that appears, select the checkboxes corresponding to the parts/score that you want to print.

OK I'll look up the linked parts but I got to tell you the linked parts don't do it for me I make changes in the score
the parts don't seem to change. So lets see if the link parts printing does it.
Thanks

Changes in the score should be reflected in the parts, unless the item has been unlinked. Then, all that needs to be done (usually) is to relink the item.

Certain [logical] things can also be score/part specific, but this is all explained in the manual. Which score changes don't get changed in the parts?

1) I tried "linked parts" but the manual says that if I wanna have parts as separate documnets, "see extracting parts."
Or, if I could make each part name shown respectively in linked parts, I could use graphic tool then. Yet all of them just show "score."

2) I also tried to print parts with Adobe printer, but it also couldn't show corresponding part names in the documents. Just in the file name. T^T

I'm not satified yet, but thanks a lot for all your help.
I'm just gonna wait for the solution by makemusic. ^^

In the Text tool, create a text block on the score. Then text menu -> Inserts -> Score/part name.
Score will then be changed into the individual staff names (instruments) in the parts, extracted or linked.

But that's the point of linked parts; you don't need separate documents any more ...

And it's easier to make PDFs of selected parts/score all in one go.

I need to send PDFs of parts to a person who doesn't have finale. (As I know, a viewer is not available for Finale2012 yet.) I've looked through the manual and given it a try about "linked parts" but couldn't find out that it's possible to make PDFs all in one go. (Maybe because "save as PDF" is broken now; I can't see it after I reinstalled finale.)

What should I look in? Or how to do it?

If "Save as PDF" doesn't work, it's a simple matter to download and install a free PDF creator (such as CutePDF - works for me; there are plenty of others just as good) and print to PDF via that.
