And hey MakeMusic, how about a setting to allow dotted rests shorter than a beat but not longer than a beat in simple meter? In my 4/4, I want dotted eighth rests, but I want quarter-rest-8th-rest instead of a dotted quarter rest, and I won't even mention how offensive dotted half rests are to me in 4/4. | Back to Top

All the sheet music I've examined for Latin-American music prefers the latter notation (doesn't break half-notes). I'm not sure what MM told me about it. Sometimes I get the problem with the figure: eighth, quarter, quarter, eighth, quarter; it will change to eighth, quarter, eighth-tie-eighth, eighth, quarter. As I have mixtures of rhythms on the same page, I've just decided to go with the "don't break main beats" rule. The underlying pulse (quarters or eighths) will show through the notation. With a copy-and-edit work method, it's reasonably easy.
Still, I'd like copy and paste (and things that seem to be pastes) to just preserve what I wrote; I'll take responsibility for notation. I do use some JW plugins to move from one notation to another though. Finale 2011b & Finale 2012c & 2014</div> GWI, GPO 4, JABB 3, Steinway Basic, COMB2

Mystery solved, but now I have a lot of long dotted rests to fix . . . I guess I traded one battle for another. | Back to Top

I don't have the dilemma, and I only have allow dotted rests in compound meter checked, which may be the default, since I've never changed it, AFAIK. Since this is a program, and not a document setting, maybe I did sometime in the distant past.

I meant to say that in addition to the first check box (which was reported to have been selected), the second one is the one that will make a difference in this situation. That's why I said both. The first box does not affect this scenario.
Sorry for the confusion.
