Why does it DO this? (see attached image)

Trying to copy the contents of beat 3 onto beat 1. The problem does not happen when I copy the beat vertically (into the same beat of another staff) but does happen when I move it horizontally.

I've tried changing "soften syncopations" but that should not apply to drag/drop, right?

Any help appreciated.

Try to find the preference/option for "allow dotted rests" and activate it.

(Unfortunately this allows dotted rests--for some unbelievable reason--which I don't like; but it should solve your problem.)

I tried that too -- I just didn't mention it because I wasn't copying any rests. Either way, it didn't work.

And hey MakeMusic, how about a setting to allow dotted rests shorter than a beat but not longer than a beat in simple meter? In my 4/4, I want dotted eighth rests, but I want quarter-rest-8th-rest instead of a dotted quarter rest, and I won't even mention how offensive dotted half rests are to me in 4/4.

I don't get this behavior. I'm attaching my quantization settings in case those might show you a variable.

What happens if you retranscribe (MIDI menu) that measure? Is this a file you created from scratch, or did it start out as a MIDI file or XML import?

It doesn't help you, but all I can say is that I don't have the problem on F2014d, no matter what the quantization settings are, provided you only try to copy just the dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern and no extra white space and drop it into a solid black destination box, as your picture indicates you are doing.

I sometimes get things like dotted-quarter, dotted-quarter, quarter changed to dotted-quarter, eighth-tie-quarter, quarter, but only when doing an "insert" rather than a paste. All the sheet music I've examined for Latin-American music prefers the latter notation (doesn't break half-notes). I'm not sure what MM told me about it. Sometimes I get the problem with the figure: eighth, quarter, quarter, eighth, quarter; it will change to eighth, quarter, eighth-tie-eighth, eighth, quarter. As I have mixtures of rhythms on the same page, I've just decided to go with the "don't break main beats" rule. The underlying pulse (quarters or eighths) will show through the notation. With a copy-and-edit work method, it's reasonably easy.

Still, I'd like copy and paste (and things that seem to be pastes) to just preserve what I wrote; I'll take responsibility for notation. I do use some JW plugins to move from one notation to another though.

I believe both items need to be checked in Quantization settings: Allow dotted rests in Simple and Compound Meter. This should solve the dilemma at hand.

Zuill, that worked :) Thanks! Although -- changing a setting for a meter I'm not using -- THAT fixes it? There's no rhyme or reason in that.

Mystery solved, but now I have a lot of long dotted rests to fix . . . I guess I traded one battle for another.

Zuill,

I don't have the dilemma, and I only have allow dotted rests in compound meter checked, which may be the default, since I've never changed it, AFAIK.  Since this is a program, and not a document setting, maybe I did sometime in the distant past.

I get the bug in 2014 with and without the copy filter. "Allow dotted rests in compound meters" seems to be the critical setting. I don't think "simple meters" matters, even though the subject is in simple meter.

I'll agree with that. My settings give good results with allow dotted rests in compound meters checked and simple meters unchecked.

I'm sorry. I meant to say that in addition to the first check box (which was reported to have been selected), the second one is the one that will make a difference in this situation. That's why I said both. The first box does not affect this scenario.

Sorry for the confusion.
