How does one rearrange the Smart Shape, Special Tools and Simple Entry palette icons and then collapse or change the shape of the palette and have the icons stay put? When I change the shape of the palette all the icons return to the default position.

I tried Save Preferences and saving the new arrangements as a Tool Set without success. This system only seems to work for the Main Tool Palette.

I can change the shape or size of these palettes and THEN rearrange, but this doesn't allow one to create palettes with just a few needed icons when the ones needed are far from each other on the palette in default position.

Does your signature need updating?

I've not had trouble with the palettes since 25.1 was released. Although I don't used Tool Sets, though.

Why not just largely dispense with the palette and use the Mac OS to program menu shortcuts to your most needed tools?

I am still using 2014 because I am using OS 8.5 for reasons to complicated to explain. Does Finale 25 indeed accomplish what I have described in my query?

Thanks to some prodding from members of this forum, I have largely moved to shortcuts. However, I do need scaled down palettes as well.

Now could some kind soul please tell me if they can rearrange the Special Tools Palette and then change its shape without all the icons reverting to default either on 2014 or Finale 25? I would like to know if I am failing to do or understand something.

Sorry if my question was unclear.

To clarify:

Is it possible to rearrange the icons on the Special Tools, Smart Shapes, and Simple Entry Palettes, then change the shape of the palettes and have the icons stay rearranged? This is in Finale 2014 or Finale 25.

John, have you ever seen the following thread? See Vaughan's response about midway down:

AFAICS, it works this way for the other palettes besides the main tool palette, as well. I just tried it and it works in 25.1.

I did read Vaughan's entry previously, but for some reason it doesn't seem work for me with the palettes I mentioned, only for the Main Tool Palette.

I list my steps here so that someone might see what I am doing wrong:

1. I open Finale 2014d and open a default document

2. I stretch out the entire Special Tools Palette horizontally one icon deep.

3. I interchange the Note Position Tool at the left end with the Beam Stem Adjust Tool at the right end.

4. Then View>Tool Sets>and select Program Tool Set 1 with the option key depressed.

5. I check View>Tool Sets and Tool Set 1 is checked.

6. I select the left most icon on the Special Tools Palette, which is now the Beam Stem Adjust Tool, so it turns blue

7. I move the right side of the palette toward the left end, in effect, collapsing it.

8. The moment I begin to collapse the palette the Note Position Tool and the Beam Adjust Tool swap positions and the palette is back to the default position and I am back to square one.

Thanks for your response, Vaughan, if it indeed works in Finale 25, I may upgrade. But it is more convenient now if I can get it to work in Finale 2014d.

I did the following experiment in both Finale 2011 and Finale 2014d. What is interesting is that result was different for each:

1. I opened Finale and a default document.

2. I stretched ALL the palettes horizontally out one deep.

3. I interchanged the first and last icons in each.

4. I selected the first icon in each palette and collapsed each palette from the right.

RESULT Finale 2011: the Main Tool Palette maintained the new arrangement WITH or WITHOUT saving it as a Tool Set. But none of the other palettes maintained the new arrangement, whatever I did.

RESULT Finale 2014: the Main Tool Palette maintained the new arrangement ONLY if it was saved as a Tool Set. But none of the others palettes maintained the new arrangement, whatever I did.

I want ALL the palettes to behave like the Main Tool Palette in Finale 2014 (or even better, as in 2011). Is this possible?

If not, could someone please verify that?

And if so, what am I doing wrong?

For the record, I posed this issue to MakeMusic, and it has been confirmed as a bug that was fixed in 2014.5.

And once more for the record, MakeMusic has now confirmed that it is not possible to preserve icon rearrangements of the Smart Shape, Simple Entry, Special Tools Palettes as part of a Tool Set. It only works for the Main Tool Palette. This is for Finale 2014 and Finale 2014.5.

This means that one cannot preserve all of one's work-space in these versions of Finale, a fact that I find amazing.
