Hello,

I'm thinking about buying one of the Finale programs for my boyfriend for Christmas.  He loves to play guitar and is always making up his own stuff but it never gets written down because by the time he stops to think about the mechanics of rhythm and all of that other stuff he forgets the chord progressions he though of.  I would like to get him something where all he has to do is play his electric guitar and it records the chords onto sheet music as he is playing.  I understand that for the tempo there are foot pedal things you can get to set it as you go along or something...Ultimately I need to know, one if it is possible to write music like this, and two, if so, what all does he need to be able to do it...I've read some stuff about MIDI guitars, but it would be better if there was something he could get that would allow him to use his own electric guitar.

If anyone could help me figure this out that would be really great!  I think it would be a wonderful Christmas present.

Thank You So Much!

In FINALE, there is an option for changing audio into notation.  All he would have to do is connect the electric guitar to the computer.  There are cords that can connect a standard guitar cord and that of a standard CD jack; and all you would have to do is connect the output jack of the amp. to the audio input of the computer.  Once this is set up, the chords he plays can be entered into notation.  The only possible problems I can think of are:

  1. If he strums the chord too slow, it might interpret them as individual notes
  2. The notation might come out as a written chord (note over note) as opposed to a chord symbol

Both problems, however, are fixeable.  The first can be fixed by messing around with the settings of FINALE (I'm not exactly sure how, but I know it can be done).  The second can be fixed by highlighting the section of music where chord symbols are desired and chosing the chord symbol plug-in (located in the plug-in menu).

Hope this helps.
