Create a new folder somewhere easily accessible (desktop?) and give it a suitable name. Through Edit/Preferences/Folder, in the Autosave/browse and Backup/browse section click on the newly created folder as your target folder. This is the fix.
For some reason, when Finale first loads onto your computer in sets 'default' folders. On some computers (it appears to be a Windows issue), Finale 'suddenly' can't find the folders for Autosave and Backups and then craps itself if it's been left open with an open file and idle for 5 or more minutes. However, if you set up a new target folder, as explained above, the issue may be the fix you've been looking for. I've now left my computer on, Finale open and an open file for over 2 hours to come back to it and continue working with no more freezing. I know the boys and girls are 'onto a fix' (by the way, it happened to me in Finale 25, too) but I'm not sure how long it will take for a fix to be available. Again, not sure if it's a Finale or Windows issue but the 'lean' is towards it being a Windows issue (and not necessarily all versions). I'm currently using Window 7 and have experienced this issue in Finale 2014, 2014.5 (and all maintenance upgrades) and now Finale.
For what it's worth.
