I write piano music for beginners and was wondering if it would be at all possible to create a finger number plugin. I haven't thought this through all the way but it would really help me work faster and stop me from wasting time googling how to writing in the fingering faster!

Most music for beginning piano is written in a five finger position. My idea is that you could:
1. chose your position (Ex. C Position which is CDEFG) and your option would designate each number to a particular letter (Ex. C = 1, D = 2, ect)
2. choose your options - Finger #'s for each note in the song, finger numbers on the first instance of each note, ect.
3. push okay and finger numbers are generated across the entire score.

Please let me know if this is possible. Thanks.

If the music is truly that simple, you can add the numbers as articulations. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are already set up as articulation metatools and can be applied in a single click.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Or you could use the Chord Tool, with the chord style "Nashville".

Using the entry method Type Into Score, as you type the note names C - D - E - F - G, you will see them change to numbers 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 as you move to the next note (by hitting the spacebar).

I suppose that the music is motorically simple so that the hand never plays two or more keys at the same time (= chords)?
You can, however, stack chord symbols, by hitting the UpArrow key.

Thanks for the replies.

Flint - If I'm understanding you correctly, I would still have to go through each note, click, and apply the finger number. I'm looking for something that would be faster, like the example I gave:
1. Choose position
2. Click an option (if needed)
3. Press the start button

Finger #'s would be placed for the entire song with only 2 or 3 clicks. And would save me a lot of time since I've got tons of these kind of pieces.

Peter - Thanks for the suggestion. I already use the lyric tool for finger #'s and I'll see if your suggestion is any faster.
