This may be of interest to some of you.

From the eMagic site:

snip-------
Apple Acquires Emagic
July 1st 2002

CUPERTINO, California and HAMBURG,
Germany -- July 1, 2002 --
Apple today announced it has acquired
Emagic, a leading provider of
professional software solutions for
computer based music production.
Emagic's most popular product, Logic, is
actively used by over 200,000 musicians
around the world. Emagic will operate as
a wholly owned division of Apple.

------

and now for the crushing blow ...

snip-------
Macintosh-based products account for
over 65 percent of Emagic's current
revenues. Emagic's Windows-based
product offerings will be discontinued on
September 30, 2002.

------

Hopefully Coda is next :) Come on, let's
have 100% mac development ... lol

Simon,

Don't give 'em any funny ideas! although I do have a Dell, I don't enjoy using Finale on it.

I used to have a compaq, after a few months I cut it in half, put a couple of wedges on the front and use it as a ramp over the car maintenence pit.

Well, inside, I'm thrilled. Turnabout's fair play, and in the end it will
make Logic a better product. But on the other hand I know what it's
like to have a product discontinued after having put a lot of blood,
sweat, and tears (come to think of it, literally) into it.

Though, I would secretly love it if Apple did buy Coda or whatever
the parent company is, and threaten to discontinue the Windows
version. I can just hear the bellyaching from over there. Of course I
wouldn't wish that on anyone, but the threat would be amusing.

This now puts the two best sequencer apps (Logic and Digital
Performer) and the top two audio apps (Protools and Logic)
squarely in the Mac market. Frankly, I've thought all along that the
best way for Apple to gain converts is to take them by force, and
this will accomplish just that. The only choices left for Windows
users will be Cubase, which is inferior (though not by a whole lot),
and Cakewalk, which is a running joke for anyone in the business
of making music.

If Apple could do two things:

1) Make its own suite of office products (a la MS Office), and
2) Buy Adobe

They'd be taking some huge steps.

Wow!

I'm surprised by two things.

1) That Apple would want to cut off the revenue streams for EMagic by discontinuing the Windows Product. There can be very few users who will change a hardware platform and all their *other* software just to follow EMagic over to Mac. They are risking 35% of their revenue.

2) The attitude of anybody who can't see that diminishing a revenue stream means that the product is less likely to get enhanced. Diversity is the essence of growth, whether taking a Darwinian or a Keynesian view.

This latter piece of surprise includes those other posters thus far - even though your tongues may have been in your cheeks en route to the post box :o)

Who knows? Maybe Apple will buy out Coda/MakeMusic and integrate Logic and Finale into one super-music package.

Imagine that! The most powerful sequencer and the most powerful notation package all in one. That would command a lot of market share, surely. But no doubt it would be a software engineering nightmare.

I don't think that this move has anything whatsoever to do with revenue.

IMHO Apple doesn't expect WinLogic users to buy a Mac, they just can't be bothered to waste resources developing for them, they are going to put 100% into making Logic the best audio/sequencing package available on any platform, and now they have the luxury not to have to think about synchronizing dual releases and all that entails.

I think Music Publ hit the nail on the head with "This now puts the two best sequencer apps (Logic and Digital Performer) and the top two audio apps (Protools and Logic) squarely in the Mac market."

This is all about status and perception. New musicians are coming into the marketplace all the time, every year new graduates are turned out, every year new University budgets are spent. Apple is saying "If you're in Music, you need a Mac". This was a common perception that has taken a few knocks over the last few years as previously Mac only companies moved into windows (didn't Coda used to develop Mac only?). Apple are simply trying to reinforce the notion that the Mac is an "Arts" machine.

If Apple could buy Adobe, well that really would be something :) I don't think that'll ever happen though.

Mathew, when you said "Maybe Apple will buy out Coda/MakeMusic and integrate Logic and Finale into one super-music package" I think you just lined up Randy Stokes for a quadruple bypass.

Peter, to address your post:

"1) That Apple would want to cut off the revenue streams for
EMagic by discontinuing the Windows Product. There can be very
few users who will change a hardware platform and all their *
other* software just to follow EMagic over to Mac. They are risking
35% of their revenue.

Darwinian or a Keynesian view."

In terms of 1), you'd be surprised. Quite a few serious musicians
use a separate computer just for audio work as it is very taxing on
a computer. Most are paid by the hour, and so any method of
keeping software (and even hardware) conflicts to a minimum is
directly translated into money. This is usually (from my years of
experience talking to other Logic users) accomplished by keeping
one computer for mundane tasks (surfing the net, word processing,
whatever else) and a separate high-powered machine just for
audio work. Logic is a high-end program, and while there's no
doubt there are amateurs tooling around with it, the high-end users
drive the market. In fact, you'd also be surprised how many of
these users already use their PCs for the former and Macs for the
latter. Or sometimes they use their PCs for something like Acid,
and network up to the Mac which runs Protools, or Logic.

as for 2) Mac-developed software is usually optimized for the Mac,
whereas something like Internet Explorer, while chock full of
functions, really blows chunks on the Mac. Usually what ends up
happening in cross-platform apps is that one platform suffers
through the porting process. It used to be that the Windows
version of Finale was awkward looking. Now that Coda has
switched its priorities, the Mac side is suffering. Logic will remain
competitive and advance just as the Mac OS and Windows borrow
from one another and progress.
