I want to insert a left-aligned whole rest on the last measure of the piece, but instead I get a centered full-measure rest. The piece is in 3/2 time, but the last measure is an incomplete measure of 2/2 (see attached).

The practice of shortening the last measure of a piece to "balance out" a pick-up measure is archaic and unnecessary.

If you insist on it, however, a whole rest is inappropriate anyway. Much like a half rest in 3/4 time, a whole rest in 3/2 is also incorrect; it should be two half rests.

But if you must...

Insert a real whole rest, rather than the default. Then, you can use the Note Position Tool to move it.

Shortening the last measure is still standard practice for hymns (probably because you repeat back to the beginning for the next verse).

Thank you for the heads up that two half rests is the way to go.

3/2 or shortened measures aside, I have learned not to be bothered by centered whole rests not vertically aligned with notes. It's standard notation to center the rests and I think Finale is doing the right thing.

There was a recent thread about this. Whole note/pause placement 5/17/15 started by Wiggy

Many standard scores center notes that fill out a whole measure, if there is nothing else going on.

In any case, I don't think that such wide measures with only one note in it is attractive.

I have attached three possible alternatives.

Mac mini (OS 10.8.5) with dual monitors
