I am almost tone deaf but I want to learn to sing.  What I miss in native ablility I make up for in peserverance.  Is there a way to keep the tuner on as a lesson plays so I can get better with my pitch?

The short answer to your question is no, but there might be a workaround. This is a feature that I know they'd like to add at some point, so I strongly suggest e-mailing them at winsupport@makemusic.com or macsupport@makemusic.com to request this feature.

On my Windows computer I was just successful in a little experiment where I ran both the free FPA program and SmartMusic at the same time. FPA is like an extremely basic version of SmartMusic, but it also has a tuner. By running FPA and SmartMusic at the same time, I was able to use the Tuner from FPA while playing the song in SmartMusic. It's worth a shot, since it only takes a minute to set up.

You can download the free FPA program from www.finalemusic.com. At the top of the screen go to Downloads >> Finale Performance Assessment.
