Hello,

I read a couple of threads discussing the problem with Finale printing to PDF and converting pure blacks to rich blacks in the process (includes components in CMYK).
http://forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=6&m=215479
http://forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=6&m=186499

However, it's not quite clear to me still what the better option is to keep pure blacks. Printing to EPS preserves pure blacks but my concern is how to preserve pure blacks when printing to PDF from Finale. I would like to stick to Finale and Acrobat in this process and not resort to any other software.

I have found that if I print from Finale to PDF (the file then contains rich black), and from this PDF, check the box "Print color as black" in the Print dialogue page and print again to PDF, it appears to work and convert everything back to 100% K only.

So my question is:
What is the preferred method to print from Finale to PDF and keep pure blacks (CMYK is 0 0 0 100%)?

I have not found a reliable method in Finale. I use Acrobat it has a pre-flight profile that fixes the problem.

Peter if you print to the Adobe PDF printer are you saying that the blacks come out correct via Finale? I never use the built in Finale to PDF option. Ever.

Hi Peter. Would you mind describing the steps you follow in Preflight within Acrobat? Thanks.

Peter, I tried a few fixup options in Preflight and "Convert color to grayscale" changed the rich black from the Finale file (the PDF print generated from Finale) to pure black. Is that what you use?

That's right. In Advanced>Preflight you should get a long list of presets. One of them is called Digital Printing (B/W). This is the one I use.

The problem occurs in various, but not all versions of Finale. It arises because of Finale using RGB colourspace to describe components. If these are converted to CMYK, they can be represented as a spread across all four inks, with K at 80% or so.

Depending on what you're printing to, this might not be a problem. But in traditional prepress environments, this can result in grey halftone notation, if the correction isn't made.

Thanks Peter/Wiggy.
Peter, I also have a convert to B/W. That one converts any colour to 100% black only (no shades of gray). It works too.
Wiggy, indeed, I am aware of the issue in a print environment. My surprise came from Finale treating EPS and print to PDF differently: print to EPS preserves pure blacks (or at least converts RGB black to pure black) but print to PDF doesn't. The problem certainly exists in Finale 2007.
Thankfully, there is a workaround...

Exporting EPS from Finale has its own problems, of course. Again, depending on version.

I have experienced some of those too, Wiggy. Some characters do not export properly to EPS.

OP:
I have problems Exporting to PDF and EPS too. It's always been weak in my opinion but PDF slightly edges out EPS in being more "usable" (when it works).
