One possibility is that if you're trying to open the file from the Recent File list in the File Menu, but have since moved the file to a new location, Finale won't be able to find it. You'd need to do a File> Open and navigate to the proper location.

PrintMusic 2001.r1 I've got exactly the same problem, whether I open from Print Music / File / Open or double-click a .mus file in Explorer
