Hi, all --

I have a madrigal I'm composing with a short repeated section. I want this section to played back at forte the first time through, and a nice mezzo-forte (or I may even go for mezzo-piano) the second time through.

I can easily create the graphics to indicate this for live performance, but is there a quick and easy way to get Finale to honour this during playback? The only thing I've thought of so far is to simply create a separate file with all the music laid out linearly, without the repeat, so I can get the dynamics right. But that seems.....well......"inelegant" is probably the kindest term I could find. ("Brain dead" was the first one that came to mind! :p )

Where would this be? The Expression Tool, the Repeats menu or tool, the Playback tools? Am I just overlooking it, or is this really something that cannot be done in current versions of Finale?

Thanks,
Matt

It's in the Expression Tool.

Expressions can be edited to have a playback effect.
When you are in the Expression Designer, click the Playback chiclet, and note that you can specify whether the expression should play only on "Pass 1" or "Pass 2".

So you create the playback effect with two expressions:
One expression with forte on Pass 1
Another expression with mezzopiano on Pass 2

Make an expression and in the playback area, designate Play on Pass #1. So your f will play on pass 1 and your p on pass 2.

Hey Guys Thanks for that tip. In all the years I've been using Finale, I was unaware of this feature.

It's good to get unstupid.
