It's looking very exciting. I love the workflow structure of it, with a Write Mode and Engrave Mode. I hope it has the customisation available with Finale - very wary that it's a programme that "knows what I'm thinking" as this was always the problem I had with Sibelius; being told what I wanted to do.

But if it can get past bar 100 of an orchestral piece without grinding to a near stop, Finale won't see me for dust.

I love the concept of a separate "write / engrave" mode that protects the music you've done while you work on tweaking the appearance. I really hope this new product inspires MM to pick up their game - a "better" version of what we have now isn't going to compete well.

I'm buying Dorico either way.

Me too (a crossgrade for $300 is very reasonable). Besides the clever concept of separate write and engrave modes, I like how the program looks at events. In write mode, a note and all that belongs to it is a single event, even if it's tied over to another measure. And, according to the blogs, Dorico is very clever with its spacing algorithms...

I don't get the separate composition-engraving thing. I just do lots of "save as" with names like xx1, xx1a, xx1b, xx1a1, xx2, etc.

Really? Is that what they've said? It's hard to imagine that a modern notation program wouldn't support chord symbols. But even if they're not yet implemented in the initial release this fall, they'll certainly have to include support for them very soon afterwards.

From what I've read on their own forums, they are basically releasing brokenware, with significant bits of the application not ready at launch. This usually signifies that their capital is either running out, or the capital provider is pushing them to release it, even if it's not finished.

Maybe I'll check it out after they actually finish it, but until then I have no interest in paying to beta test.

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014d using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 10, 12GB RAM, frequently RTFM.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

you know perfectly well that a week after Doritos gets released Apple will release a compulsory "upgrade" to its OS that will completely break everything in Doritos.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 and now 2014 under Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

Apple upgrades are not compulsory, at least not right away. Of course, if you're a true believer, you're gonna want to be the first on your block. My OS is 3 years old. Of course, I'm only using Finale 2011 and 2012. But 2014.5 runs without a hitch.

I've been following them pretty closely, and really like some of the more complex engraving rules they are accounting for, but a notation program that can't even do a lead sheet is pretty ridiculous. What exactly is their market then, high end classical publishers? Great, their sales will be in the dozens. This is a major strategic mistake for them IMO, and one they might not recover from. I'm sure all the folks at MM are glad to hear Dorico won't be able to do chord symbols, as I imagine most of Finale's user base will require them and will have no interest in leaving Finale.

I think that we can be sure that chord symbols will be coming. But yes, it sounds like there is some pressure to get SOMETHING out there, before we all forget how unhappy we are with our current product.

I'm not so unhappy with Finale or It's present ownership. I'am though peeved at the way Avid is running (ruining) Sibelius and it's development team(s), and structuring ownership and use of its product lines.

I found some additional info on the Sibelius Blog:

Concerning playback, I was surprised to read that it will VST sample instruments, but not use AU which are used in Macs.
