I am planning to update my set up and upgrade my computer.  I have Finale 2004 and am at present running it on a computer - good spec, about 5 years old but beginning to show its age.

I also have a Boss Dr Synth DS-330 sound module which I'm sure is hopelessly out of date (I don't want to spend money on this as I am mostly an acoustic composer, would I be better using the new Finale sounds?) and a Yamaha pf85 keyboard.

All this is midi connected via the games port on the computer via the Y shaped connector.  Should I go for USB or even a computer which has midi in/out connections?

Is soundcard still an issue and what about speakers?  I'm not into gaming and surround sound speakers doesn't seem relevant - however, I do have some good quality hi-fi speakers which I plan to connect to an external amplifier so that I can playback quality sound which I assume will be better than anything through the computer?

Any advice please on this and also computer specs?  I have been researching heavily (bought 3 magazines in the last week) but am a little confused!  Are Power PCs which are aimed at gaming relevant for using Finale?

Thanks very much!!!!

If running Finale 2004 is your main concern, you certainly do not need a 'gamers' PC. Finale is not nearly as demanding as most audio or video programs. A pentium processor running anywhere from 1.2 GHz and up as well as 256 MB of RAM will do nicely. I find a large screen monitor really helps with page/score viewing.

MIDI is easily accomplished with a simple USB to MIDI adaptor

Soundcard and speaker upgrades are not necessary, but you might enjoy the 'kick' from a subwoofer speaker combo at your desktop.

Good Luck.

You should make no judgement on sound quality based on any software/sound card/speaker combination.
Judge only the configuation that will be used for the actual performance.
