Has anyone at Finale or elsewhere ever considered creating a Percussion Map that includes rudimental drum notation like flams, ruffs, 5 stroke rolls, etc. that can be mapped to a midi keyboard? Unless I'm missing something, the only way to create a flam is to (1) enter an 1/8th note, (2) convert it to a grace note, and then (3) enter the principal note. Same extra step with rolls that require use of the articulation tool.

Unfortunately, that's the way to do it in Finale. I'm not sure you could use a percussion map to set up flams, ruffs, etc., unless you have those sounds in your MIDI drumset.

I can understand the problem with the
playback...but would it be possible to do it
purely in the notation? Just like, click
here for a four-stroke ruff...
(I've never been able to get satisfactory
playback with rudimental percussion
anyway, so I've given up on that...but the
notation would be extremely helpful!)

I agree with Zac. I'm not concerned about playback either--just ease of notation entry.

I would like to add a vote for a notation shortcut for the basic elements of rudimental percussion. If I could enter a Flam as a single entity, and the slashed note of the roll in one step, tied over to the final stroke or two strokes (if an even stroke roll with double accent, I would gladly enter the time values and a Control or Alt key code to create the finished notes. I do not want the rudiments to be single units (i.e., a single selection of Paradiddle might put 4 notes in place as if they were a single picture, not 4 editable notes), since that precludes the possibility of working in old music (my specialty) and in foreign traditions. They all have patterns we never or seldom use. The hard work is the detail stuff to create single notation elements that require several steps to complete, as with the ruff, flam, and roll.

I'm not sure if this would EVENTUALLY save you some time, but I have made a percussion document made up of each and every measure that I have ever written for percussion. Then when I write my percussion part, I also keep this file open so that I can cut and paste wherever possible from my "library" file to my current piece in progress. This at least saves editing time. It might be applicable in your case. I try not to do anything twice if I can help it. By using cut and paste techniques I can frequently save lots of time. Jack
