I posted this once already but just trying again to look for help.

I upgraded to Finale 25.1 from 2014.5.
I have not changed any hardware or operating systems.

In speedy entry mode, when I set CAPS LOCK and select a note value (e.g. 5 for a quarter note),
I play a note on my keyboard input device, I hear it but nothing appears on the screen.
As soon as I click anywhere else, it crashes ("program not responding").

An additional problem:
I also noticed that when I try to "playback" my work, it does not play; There is a momentary
'processing for human playback' window; the playback cursor
does not move.
Under MIDI/Audio I have it set "Play Finale thru MIDI" which I usually do.

I stop playback...I can resume working.

The first problem is what I REALLY need help with.
Short of re-installing, I don't know what to do.
Anyone have any ideas as to what I might check??
THANKS!

You already have an open active post on this topic. Apparently no one here is able to help. We are not representatives of MakeMusic--only fairly experienced users. So, I suggest you open a support ticket.

Tom, there's a button now for resetting your program preferences. It very often solves the kinds of problems you're having. It's not your fault--pressing the button in fact deletes a file in which Finale stores more than just user preferences, and it sometimes gets corrupted. So give that a try before reinstalling (it's probably what customer support will suggest).

Follow the instructions here:

/usermanuals.finalemusic.com/FinaleWin/Content/Finale/Finale_Preferences.htm?Highlight=reset%20preferences

Thanks.
I had already re-installed when I saw your suggestion.
I tried your 'reset preferences' solution and it did not work.

I had a theory that this problem was related to my problems with
"playback" not working.

Investigating MakeMusic support, I found this article:

https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/217526428

I edited the FINMIDI.INI file as it suggests, and, voila...everything is working.

Although their method of editing did not work....
you've got to find the correct path expression...
on my PC it was
C:\Users\tom\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale

Then simply open the FINMIDI.INI file and make the changes.

Tom,

Those instructions, as is usual, are out of date.  You found that out.  They refer you to a directory named "Finale [your version number]", without the quotes.  This is valid for some versions of Finale prior to Finale 25, e.g. Finale 2012, Finale 2014, and Finale 2014.5.  Starting with Finale 25, that particular directory was named simply "Finale".  Finale 25.1 is just an update of Finale 25, and not a standalone version that can run concurrently with Finale 25, as was the case with Finale 2014 and Finale 2014.5.  That is why there is no directory name Finale 25.1.  Any files updated from 25 to 25.1 were simply replaced in the "Finale" directory hierarchy.

The environment variable %appdata%, when put in a directory path, should translate to your roaming AppData directory, e.g. in your case, "C:\Users\tom\AppData\Roaming"
