Hi Charlie,

What are you basing your accusation on? The two Scott's couldn't use Finale because they seemed to be missing the font files and did not have a CD to install them from. (One Scott freely admitted he stole it; the other said he lost a $400 CD in his room.) Mr/Ms "IntoThe Forest" does not have that probem--at least judging from what I saw of the Finale file s/he posted in another thread.

Just curious....

Not wanting to pick sides, but I believe that the "Scotts" mentioned that they got their copy up and working now...and they'd return under another name. I would assume that it is primarily through the diction and grammar of the posts that Charlie based his observation upon.

There's an easy way to get rid of all posts by an offensive poster (until the admin gets back from the holiday and can do some housecleaning) - simply click the 'thumbs down' icon in the upper right of the message to add the 'person' to your ignore list.

The only problem there is that often times...a thread is discussing something and you have no idea what they're talking about. I had the Scotts ignored from about post three, and then the anger on the forum made no sense to me until I removed the "ignore."

Same problem here.

BTW, I find it rather disturbing to note how quickly and easily "Scott" (if that's his real name) was able to get MakeMusic to send him a "replacement" CD when he had absolutely no proof of purchase. I wonder if that technique will work with other vendors. "Hi, I spent $400 on your product and now I've lost the CD and all documentation, my receipt, my credit card statement showing the purchase. Everything. My room is such an awful mess, you wouldn't believe it. So, can you pretty please send me a new CD?"

Boggles the mind.

Ron, I doubt he was being honest with you on getting a replacment CD. Rather it was just another ruse to get someone to help him.
Some people have no conscience about lying and deceiving to meet their needs.

Hi CK,
He had to have a CD to install the fonts--unless he managed to steal them too, in which case what I told him was meaningless. What I told him, about how to do this, anyone with even a tiny bit of computer experience should have been able to figure out. Of course, I forget, according to Scott we all have small IQ's because we are stupid enough to pay for what we use. Maybe super geniuses like him are just so far beyond human comprehension that they need to be reminded of how to do the basic things.

Ron, Not to belabor the point, but my suspicion is that although Scott claimed to have fixed his font problem, IMO he did not. If you recall, before he returned looking for help on the same issue as "Scott_Gallagher" he wrote he had fixed the fonts. He only said he did in order to claim a "victory" over the legitimate users. I think he's still got his wingdings and no CD to install. Just a hunch.

CK,

I´m very unpleased to tell you that, in fact, it is very, stupidly easy to get pirate sofware (including a full image of the original CD) on internet. There are entire industries in countries like China and Brazil to produce this copies and distribute them to the rest of the world. The real point is: those who really (professionally) use a software, like me and you, are able to recognize its true value, and are eager to pay for it and thus garantee that new versions and corrections for eventual bugs will exist. Honest amateur users will also pay for it, if not because of fear of law´s arm, at least to be honest with themselves. The remaining (including all "Scotts" or whatever they call themselves)... Well, maybe one day there will be a way of catching them and make them pay for their crimes. Untill then, I would be very pleased if MakeMusic created a new sign-in system for this forum, including restrictions for non-registered finale users.

Cheers,

Thomas

You know back in the dark ages, "C=64" era.  I ran a public BBS on a C=128D.
I had over 1000 user's all the time.  We have nodes, or hops set up all across the US to get e-mail through.  Then came the internet and knocked all us little guys off.
Anyway, cracks for the hot software of the time came out as fast as the original was availible for sale!  I saw zips with many, 12, 18, and more cracks in one file.
But you know it seems as if the totally uncopy protected software sold as well as the heavily protected stuuf did.  We even had dongles and keys you had to hook up to a port on the computer and still someone cracked it.
I buy Finale, over and over, because I believe it is a value and I get value from the Finale folks.  They deserve their due!

Let's just face it; it is impossible to eliminate all software piracy.
However, what we can do is to provide the pirates with good alternatives.

As a Finale user you can tell people about the alternative Finale versions -
Not everyone know that NotePad or PrintMusic exists! This way YOU might save
a few amateur musicians from turning into pirates. A lot of this people only use
notation software occasionaly and would perhaps appreciate these easy-to-use alternatives.

The biggest challenge is of course "providing the pirates with good alternatives".
MakeMusic! could learn a lot from similar developers like Steinberg or Digidesign.
They both offer (or offered) 100$ lite-versions of their software (Cubasis and ProTools LE)
This software was often bundled with misc. products from other manufactures.
I actually own three licences for Cubasis - one was bundled with my soundcard, the second was bundled
with my CD-recorder and the latter I bought after I started using Win2000 and the two first
ones were outdated.

I believe that MakeMusic has to put some effort in ONE attractive light-version of Finale.
I know a lot of students who use professional software in the labs and still use a cracked
license at home or in their laptops - some of them don't know that NotePad is availeble
and those who have tried it often find that it's too "light". And I also know that there are
music teachers, at many different levels, who use one licence at work and "another one"
at home...

If this "Perfect Light-Version" was distributed properly (examples are bundling it with soundcards and MIDI equipment or
giving away free copies to college students) MakeMusic! could start making some money.
Then OSX'ers would have their 2k4, no-one would ever think of migrating to S****** and
YOU wouldn't have to pay for Scott's software!

Yes, That's what Printmusic was made for. The problem: very few publicity over it. Also, I haven't seen a version of Notepad compatible with Fin 2K4 - as far as I remember, 2K3 was shipped almost together with Notepad 2k3. IMHHO, I believe that promoting Notepad (I mean, put it everywhere, make it really visible), distributing the plugin for finale viewer and giving Notepad more capacities would really have some impact over the market, and would stimulate some now-ilegal users to use the free version.

Cheers,

Thomas

I guess so, but I think MakeMusic! offers too many versions of Finale (NotePad, NotePad Plus, PrintMusic, Guitar, Allegro and Finale).
I believe it would be easier, both for developers and users, if we could concentrate on just two or three versions. The challenge is to develop
a light version that is cheap enough to give away, still powerful enough to satisfy most amateurs and semi-pros.

Martin M
