I have a vague recollection of people writing here about long-term unaddressed problems with Expression Tool during Playback, but my searches could not find anything.

Sometimes when I use Expression Tool to attach ffff to a measure it does attach to the measure and keeps playing ffff properly during Playback thereafter, until I have entered a different expression. But sometimes when I use Expression Tool to attach ffff to a measure it seems to attach to the first note only during Playback, then immediately returns to the default dynamic. I've tried to find a workaround, but nothing seems to work for me. I do notice that I seem to have this problem when I have used Expression Tool to change the dynamics a few times during a piece, not usually when I've used it just once or twice. Does anybody know what's happening here? Is there a way to make it right short of opening a brand new chart and transferring everything into it? (Assuming that even that works.)

The only thing that might interfere is another expression or MIDI data. If you have a file for our examination, we might be able to test it for you.

Here it is, Zuill--

I've left it in the condition it was when I last left it, including some of my extra efforts to get it to register ffff continuously. The difficulty is in the bass clef staff. You'll see where I've inserted extra ffff notations, but only the very next note is ffff. Thanks for taking the time for this.

You are probably going to be stuck with things as is. HumanPlayback has a setting called Automatic Expression. The Standard HP you have chosen has this checked. I'm not sure SongWriter can customize HP settings and uncheck this. If so, you are in luck. If not, then maybe turn HP off.

Zuill to the rescue again. Turning off Human Playback solved the problem. I never have figured out the advantage of HP anyway. I used to think that I had to have HP Jazz selected in order for Swing to work when I needed swing eights. But that's not true. Swing works on its own, independently of HP, so . . . ? Not that I wanted HP Jazz on for Long Black Veil, anyway. I just had HP Standard selected and Swing not selected at all, but I don't know what HP was doing other than interfering with Expression Tool during Playback like that. I won't be leaving HP on any more, at least until I figure out what it does for me.

Anyway, I turned off HP and Playback began playing the ffff figures properly. So, thanks to you again, Zuill.
